Historia
As a master spy, Gallatin has proved he can take on formidable foes - and kill them. As a passionate lover, he attracts beautiful women. But there is one extra factor that makes Michael Gallatin a unique special agent - he is a werewolf, able to change form almost at will, able to assume the body of a wolf and its capacity to kill with savage, snarling fury. In the madness of war, Gallatin hunts his prey - ready to outthink his opponents with his finely tuned brain. Or tear their throats out with his finely honed teeth....

Fun spy story with a twist
Revisado: 09-20-24
Given I have a 90-minute commute to work, I have decided to revisit an old favorite: The Wolf's Hour, for which I choose this version over the Simon Prebble-narrated version.
I knew in advance there was sex. I was not prepared for the multicast re-enactment, and neither were the Amish farmers I passed on my way to work.
A minor annoyance is that Parts One and Two are attributed to Robert M, rather than Robert R McCammon. Overall, it's an enjoyable production.

Historia
The greatest of all Civil War campaigns, Gettysburg was the turning point of the turning point in our nation’s history. Volumes have been written about this momentous three-day battle, but recent histories have tended to focus on the particulars rather than the big picture: on the generals or on single days of battle—even on single charges—or on the daily lives of the soldiers. In Gettysburg Sears tells the whole story in a single volume.

Best Single Volume about the Battle
Revisado: 12-22-23
Ask any Civil War Historian or Civil War buff the single best volume on the Battle of Gettysburg and they're likely to recommend this title. And with good reason.
Like so many, it was The Killer Angels and its subsequent film adaptation which sparked my interest many moons ago. In the years since, I've gone on to read several books about just those three days in a small Pennsylvania town in July 1863.
What makes this title stand apart is the author takes the time to set up the battle in its appropriate context while stripping away the mythology 150 built up. There's five hours of listening before actual battle begins. The only downside is the narrator who gets dinged for mispronouncing Heth and Susquehanna.

Felt like LeHane was Pressured
Revisado: 08-01-23
At the end of Prayers for Rain, Patrick and Angie are back together, and it's a good end for the series. Moonlight Mile feels like LeHane was pressured, either by fans or his publisher, to crank out another Kenzie and Gennaro to answer the question of what became of Amanda McCready.
I won't spoil the book, but this definitely doesn't feel like a book the author wanted to write.

General U.S. Grant and General Sherman are caught off guard by the entire Confederate Army, with their backs to the Tennessee River! Confederate General Johnston's plan was to attack Grant's left and separate the Union army from its gunboat support (and avenue of retreat) on the Tennessee River, driving it west into the swamps of Snake and Owl Creeks, where it could be destroyed.

Just Okay
Revisado: 01-01-23
The biggest problem, even someone who is well-versed in the era, is figuring out who each voice belongs to. Unless it's Grant, it's near impossible to figure out who is who because most of the actors are just voices without a name.
Beyond that, my issues are minor and pedantic.

Historia
Hailed as the most compelling biography of the German dictator yet written, Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the heart of its subject's immense darkness. Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the character of the bizarre misfit in his thirty-year ascent from a Viennese shelter for the indigent to uncontested rule over the German nation that had tried and rejected democracy in the crippling aftermath of World War I.

Detailed and dry
Revisado: 11-17-22
If you're looking for a laundry list of Hitler's life, Kershaw is your man. This book takes a critical eye at Hitler and the world that created him, but does so without creating a 3 dimensional look at the man himself. I respect and understand why, but painting a human doesn't mean you have to be sympathetic.

Judaism is more than a religion; it is a civilization, including a people, a language, unique laws, a system of ethics, customs, a homeland, and a theology. Jews worship one God and obey a wide-ranging and vigorous moral law centered around the Torah, God's teaching or instruction. Jewish sacred literature preserves the ancient oral tradition through the Hebrew Bible and other writings.

Tale for all ages
Revisado: 05-07-22
This tale of a lonely young girl is a wonderful tale. While it employs common tropes (two former friends who rekindle their friendship being chief among them), the author uses it to great effect. I will definitely be revisiting this one in the future.

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever. Alternate History Done Right
Revisado: 04-16-22
I've always enjoyed reading horror--ever since I was a kid, it was a genre that attracted me. I also grew up with a fondness for reading about the American Civil War. This book seemed custom made for it. From the fist chapter, I was invested in the narrtive--and the only reason I can't give the book a full five stars is because it became evident too late that this was the first in a series.

Their explosive reports won a Pulitzer Prize for The Washington Post and toppled the president. This is the book that changed America.

Rape shouldn't be a repeated plot point
Revisado: 03-16-22
I read Inca Gold years ago, back when it first came out. I loved it. I was also 12. Now, 28 years later, I thought it would be fun to revisit. I was wrong.
Throughout the narrative, villains use the threat of rape repeatedly against various women--including a sitting congressperson. Without that, the book would rate two stars.
