Accents and Narration
Revisado: 08-30-24
This was an intriguing story to be sure, especially for someone like myself who is looking for an ancestor from Europe during that time period. I have to say, though, that the reader l, while excellent at accents and dialects, was not as appealing while presenting the narrative portions of the book. Not exactly monotone, her voice had a rather monotonous, one-tune musical and rhythmic quality with the same rises and falls in every sentence. I did finish listening to the story to find out what happened but was tempted more than once to put it down because of the performance.

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Historia
When the war finally ended in May 1945, Lieutenant Danny McClain made good on his promise to come back for Anya in Holland. He expected her to put up a fight but instead found her exhausted and utterly broken. Maybe it was unfair, asking her to marry him when she was so vulnerable. But this much he knew: He would spend a lifetime helping to make her whole again. The war had taken everything from Anya - her family, her friends, her home, her faith. She clung to the walls she'd fortressed around her heart, but what future did she have apart from Danny?

I found The reader's nasal voice for Danny, Joey, and Dad to be quiite unpleasant to listen to.
