Takes five sentences to say what one sentence could. For these sort of nonfiction self-help/informational books, I just want actionable knowledge, not to sit down with someone and chat with them like they’re my friend. Imagine if a science textbook was worded like that every sentence. It would be twice as long, give no more information, and probably not be any easier to understand for it. The information that is here, if you’ve studied other, similar books, you’ve already heard it before and probably more succinctly.

This book covers about 80 different medical dilemmas within its runtime. It always starts with an explanation of the proposed scenario, usually based on a real scenario, and then an explanation of current laws, standards, and precedent for exceptions. It usually sides with examples from American healthcare, but it will sometimes include examples of what other nations have chosen within similar circumstances.

But what I most appreciate is how quickly it gets through each scenario. It doesn’t hem and haw, it doesn’t preach, it just gives you the facts and then moves right onto the next scenario without telling you or steering you towards a “correct “solution to the proposed problem.

Easy recommendation for anyone with an interest in American healthcare or ethics. Or even to anyone interested in learning more about themselves; I learned things about my values and standards that I didn’t know before listening.

I feel that this book will only be of use to you if:

1: you are a high school student
2: you have never independently studied how to write books
3: you are interested in writing a literary novel

If two or more of this list are not true for you, then this book will likely be 10 hours of information that you already know.

Unfortunately, the other caveat is that if you are not writing a literary novel, and are instead writing genre fiction, or even trying to write a script or a screenplay, then very little of the information presented here is going to help you, because it is so custom tailored to literary novel writing

Because it is trying to cover how to write fiction, which is a very broad topic, it doesn’t go into great depth for each aspect of writing beyond quoting a lot of authors at you that you have already heard many other teachers, professors, and writing books worship.

Instead, I would encourage you to pursue books that don’t try to cover something as broad as writing fiction in general, and instead target specific aspects of writing that you are having trouble with. Here are my recommendations:

Grammar: woe is I

Theme creation and implementation: the local script man YouTube channel

How to structure a story: save the cat

How to incorporate character development: Creating Character Arcs

How to write dialogue: How to Write Dazzling Dialogue

How to appeal to agents and editors: the forest for the trees

I feel that pursuing specific topics will be of more use to you as a writer than trying to study everything all at once and learning little.

Bell explains himself with clear and simple language that makes it easy to follow his advice.

He uses many pop culture examples, which normally I am not fond of for writing advice books. Most don’t explain the source they are referencing, alienating readers. For example, most advice books would say something like “the scene where Joe discovers the body has some great dialogue.” And then it would go launching into an explanation about the subtleties of the dialogue and how you can emulate it. But if you don’t know the source, you’re just left wondering who is Joe, what’s up with the body, how did he discover it? It becomes a distraction instead of a help.

That’s why I really like what Bell does. He very clearly explains the context of any scene and characters within it before launching into quotes from the scene. It makes it so much easier to follow and appreciate his advice.

Easy recommendation for writers of any skill level.

Too many pop culture examples

The greatest strength of this book is that it explains not just a positive character change arc, but also flat arcs about the protagonist changing the world around them instead of themselves, and arcs about the protagonist becoming corrupt.

Unfortunately, every description of an arc is accompanied by anywhere between 3-6 or so examples from pop culture. Sometimes these examples summarize the material, providing enough context so that even if you aren’t familiar with the material, you can still understand the example, and other times they are written as if everyone in the world already knows the story.

Sometimes this is fine. Most people have seen Toy Story or a Christmas Carol. But how many people still know about the movies The Kid or What About Bob? The problem with pop culture examples is that they don’t always age well, and they instantly alienate your audience if they don’t know what you’re talking about.

I think it would have been better for each arc to have a made up example of a story, and we follow the development of the protagonist throughout their arc. There would be no confusion, and no risk of the example becoming outdated, because it would be original.

I also found it frustrating that every chapter began with a quote. Sometimes the quote had little to nothing to do with the content of the chapter. It felt like they were thrown in for the sake of making the chapter sound more auspicious. But this just came across as pretentious to me.

As a game developer, I listened to this out of hope that I could pick up some of the workflow or design philosophies or just general advice from people that have developed and finished successful video games. That is not what this book is. This book plays out like ten videos by a YouTuber dramatist summarizing a catastrophically unbelievable development history of a video game. There is little point, there are few lessons to be learned, this is just pure and simple entertainment. I guess if that’s what you’re looking for from the outset, it’s not bad. I wanted something more.

I picked up this book because I thought it would be about psychology, not meditation. I decided to keep listening on a whim.

When I started focusing only on my breathing for five minutes every day, it was surprisingly difficult. My mind was full of constant distractions and wanted to wander incessantly. I had to catch myself and keep pulling my mind back to focus on my breathing over and over again.

In doing so, I found that I developed a new skill: the ability to yank my mind out of any distracting, hurtful, or gratuitous daydreams throughout the rest of the day. I no longer need to be haunted by embarrassing things that I did during school, or minor arguments I had that my mind exaggerates into being way more hurtful than they actually were, or gratuitous daydreams about cringe wish fulfillment.

Becoming more focused has allowed me to be a happier person with greater self-control. I would recommend that to anyone, even if I don’t think that necessarily guarantees you will be more productive.

If you have read any self-help/self development book before, the ideas presented here won’t be new to you. However, they are presented in a succinct, conversational manner, and each chapter is filled with entertaining and emotional anecdotes. It doesn’t read like a textbook like other self-help books can. Because of that, even if it’s a story that you have heard before, I think it is still worth the listen.

David Brooks saw me

Back in 2020, I experienced multiple brain surgeries that had many complications physically. But the worst complication came emotionally. I developed depression that overwhelmed me. I would sleep in until noon, not change my clothes, not shave, not shower, put off meals. This state of nonliving felt permanent, never ending. I remember one time I was sitting in my bed with my laptop in front of me. I knew that if I booted up a game on my laptop, I could be having fun and enjoying myself. But I just stared at the screen. Time seemed to standstill. Clicking the EXE to start the game somehow felt like an insurmountable challenge. No one I explained this to understood why I couldn’t just click it and move on.

This isn’t a book about depression. This is a book about seeing other people. David Brooks has never had depression. But even so, his compassionate heart saw me. The chapter that he wrote about depression more accurately captures my feelings than I have yet to be able to articulate myself. They are words so soulful, human, and loving that they sound like poetry to my ears.

This isn’t just a book about how to see others. Maybe, it can be a book that sees you too.

In an effort to establish itself as the definitive book on dialogue, it acts like you have no idea what dialogue is or that never studied literature before. It takes about an hour to write a definition of what dialogue is. I fell asleep twice.

If you want someone that speaks to you plainly, doesn’t treat you like an idiot, and doesn’t incessantly reference works of literature that they worship, consider watching even just one hour of videos from Local Script Man on YouTube. They’re free, and I have a feeling that you’ll get more out of watching one hour of them than listening to this for 10 hours.
