Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Beautiful historical fiction
Revisado: 03-14-25
I love words. Despite not always being good at spelling, words are wonderful, no illustrious.
I am most struck by the research and development placed in keeping historical accuracy a central part of this story. I truly enjoyed walking through the story of the Dictionary with Esme, but recognizing bits of history was invaluable. Beautiful work.

Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

Beautiful Adventure
Revisado: 01-12-25
No spoilers, but I certainly loved the adventure in this sweet novel. It gave me so many moments to reminisce on stories from my nana, while sending my mind soaring through new stories that brought fairytales to life.

So beautiful. There are few words, but at the end of all of this lovely story, at its heart…the life impossible is truly to live and love. Worth the read. I know I will read again soon.

Beautiful and twisted
Revisado: 05-14-24
I was most certainly enchanted. This story has the feel of another world, with elements that are familiar. The connection to 12 Dancing Princesses made my heart happy. I was taken on a lovely journey I didn’t expect, and truly wasn’t quite sure just who the true antagonist was until so near the end.

Voices in the background
Revisado: 05-03-24
This reader is phenomenal, however there are very clearly voices in the background. Especially obvious with decent acoustics or my headphones. It truly became aggravating despite a wonderful story.

Historia
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Select memories have a place
Revisado: 12-19-23
I love this novel. Neil Gaiman always takes readers on a fantastical journey. This book is no different. I love that Neil read this piece for us. I could hear where he felt emotions were best delivered.
At the end of the day, literal and literary, this book really is about the memories we have. I love it. We are all wanderers. We all have memories that resurface for fleeting moments. In the end, it’s not the memories, but the way we continue to live that is of the most value. The select memories that carry us through are what make life worth the living.
I wonder, what is my ocean? Surely we all have one.

Historia
In January 2019, culture writer Anne Helen Petersen set the internet on fire with her viral BuzzFeed essay diagnosing “millennial burnout” - a chronic state of stress and exhaustion that’s become a “base temperature” for young people today. Now, she continues this generation-defining conversation in a brand-new format, interviewing millennials around the country about their own deeply personal experiences with burnout, and the culture that creates it.

Eye-opening
Revisado: 06-01-23
As a teacher and a gap kid, not really Gen X/not really Millennial, I have found I’m not only burning out, but so are my students. There is an overwhelming pressure to continue to be more. This is a great read to simply identify that it is a thing.
Older generations ask us to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and keep going exacerbating the problem. There is wisdom in the interviews here. I hope to add even a bit of the conversation here to conversations with my children, my students, and my peers.
