This is a five-star listen, and nobody tells a story better than Stephen King. That’s first and foremost, because I want to acknowledge the complaints. We all know King’s personal views on social and political issues. He has never been shy about injecting these into his written universe. I do feel he is heavy-handed with the Trump and anti-vax criticism in this one. That is going to seriously offend some of his audience (maybe not most, but certainly some). To me, King is getting a bit older and probably less inclined to “soften” his message. Also, the characters in this book would likely feel as portrayed during the time this novel was set. In case we don’t remember, this was one of the most divisive times in our recent history as Americans.

As a lifelong King fanatic, I’ll gladly devour whatever the man puts out. Even if you disagree with his politics, this is a snapshot into the viewpoint from the other side (and it’s real).

My suggestion — look past it and shrug it off if it bothers you, because this is an outstanding story, and you are cheating yourself of that listening experience if you skip or discard this one.

Highly recommended. This is a short but well-executed slice of menacing Appalachian mountain voodoo. This was my first Wellman experience but won’t be my last!

If you love the Parker series, stop reading reviews and get started on this one

This is the 19th book in the Parker series, so I really don’t understand the need for reviews around the content. If you have read the first 18, then you are an obsessed fan (like me) and you will love this one. If you have not read the previous 18 entries, then you certainly don’t want to start here. However — this is a Louis-centric story involving horrific villains, and we get to continue to associate with Parker (although briefly), Ross, Angel, The Great Lost Bear, and other key pieces of the Parker Saga. If you are a fan and if you have read all of the previous Parker novels, you should stop reading reviews and listen now!

Maybe a “trunk” novel? Regardless, ignore the negative reviews

I love the Parker series and The Dirty South is another excellent entry into the dark, dangerous, and often mildly comic world of Charlie Parker. This novel is not part of the ongoing narrative and saga, and that’s why I wonder if it might have been written previously as almost an aside, and then released at this time. The racial themes are relevant in 2020. Regardless, the classic Parker vibes are here, and it’s a great small-town PI tale. Also — any time you get a dose of Angel and Louis, it’s a win.

This is what an audiobook should be, and one I will measure future listens against. Cline’s story and Wheaton’s narration come together for a truly immersive experience. If you have even a passing interest in science fiction or 80’s nerd culture, this book will hit all the right buttons. I can’t recommend it enough.

Terrific Premise, but....

Jeff Vandermeer is a gifted author and storyteller, and has a strong grasp of language (more on this below). The premise is everything I could have hoped for: secret government agency, mysterious location that may be multi-dimensional, bizarre events, etc. Essentially, this seemed like a fresh take on the "LOST" concept.

However -- I was not engaged with the characters, and, ultimately, I was not interested in their fate. The first book, Annihilation, is easily the best of the three and could be read as a standalone. Even in this story, however, the terrific setup is brought down by the Biologist perspective, which drags the story down. Books 2 and 3 continue to be populated by characters that I was increasingly bored with, to the point where finishing became a bit of a chore.
On a side note, I found Vandermeer's overuse of the word "banal" to be frustrating and perplexing. He clearly has a strong language base and vocabulary, so I don't understand why this word was used so frequently. If you had to take a drink every time you saw "banal" or "banality", you would be in the hospital (or worse).

I give it three stars because the premise is outstanding, and Jeff is a great writer. I just struggled with the execution and characters in this one.

To be candid, I am a big fan of John Connolly and the Charlie Parker series. I have enjoyed every entry in the series, although some have maybe lacked the punch and energy of his earlier novels. A Time of Torment, however, fires on all cylinders and serves as a huge reminder why this is my favorite thriller series. It heavily features Parker (and his tormented past), his remarkable sidekicks, Angel and Louie, a deeply mysterious faction of humanity (The Cut), and small-town drama at its finest.
Always a genre-bending author, Connolly carefully weaves the supernatural into (an often harsh) reality in a way that never dilutes the feeling of realism or the compelling nature of the story.
The narrator was wonderful as well, and I simply couldn't put it down (so to speak). This one is a winner.
