Historia
On the border between Valdemar and the deadly Pelagirs Forest, the gryphon hero Kelvren returns from a near-fatal self-sacrifice that won him the approval of Valdemar's ground troops, but caused a diplomatic crisis. Frustrated by his lack of a hero's welcome, Kelvren is talked into helping with an expedition by his old friend, Firesong. Firesong struggles with his own age and mortality, and he intends to solve a vast mystery at the center of legendary Lake Evendim as his crowning achievement.

Inconsistencies
Revisado: 12-18-23
***** SPOILERS *****
The story progression is too slow to get moving forward and then, it suddenly stops with a huge cliff hanger! I finished the book because I wanted to have the full tale. Valdemar books have always ended the current story within each book. You could pick up any book in the series and read it as a stand alone story. This one stands out as different - jarringly different. Like many others, this book didn’t read/sound like a Mercedes Lackey book.
***** SPOILERS *****
Some examples of inconsistency to the Valdemar world;
Why did the Skybolts become the Firebolts?
When did Teryvon become an Adept? Last we knew, he was a “master, of a sort”. Suddenly, Treyvon is able to create a heartstone (that will fracture, but still)!
It feels like a lot of time has passed between Kel’s recharging and his arrival at the Vale. The k’Valdemar Vale is SO different.
The Prologue indicates it hasn’t been that long since Darian and his group returned home. Just exactly where did these “elders” or the council come from? Where’s Starfall? Why change the council “house”?
With both Snowfire and Nightwind going on this journey, why is there not one mention of Moonshadow (their baby daughter)?
When did Silverfox and Nightwind get bondbirds?
Side note for the audible versions: One of the largest inconsistencies is how each character speaks (accent). I realize different people are reading these stories, but could we not at least have a semblance of consistency in how characters speak and how things are pronounced? Firesong and Darian sound so different they were unrecognizable.

Consistency in characters
Revisado: 12-05-22
Although I enjoyed the performance, I found the different vocal timber and accents disjointing from the original four books. Would it have been too difficult for Talia and Kerowyn to have the same accents as before? I’m just trying additionally, Talia’s voice in this series is too deep and harsh. She isn’t but five years older than Elspeth. That’s my biggest complaint. Consistency with accents and tones.

I wish there was more!
Revisado: 06-01-22
I have loved reading Mercedes’ stories since I was 18, so many years ago. I have really enjoyed listening to the Audible versions. For this one, however, I found his very fast reading to be hard to understand. I had to go back many times so that I could hear and understand what he said. Other than that, I enjoyed his performance.

Read with accents??
Revisado: 12-14-21
I’ve been reading Mercedes’ Valdemar books since hey first came out. As the author is American, I found it distinctly odd to have the book read with accents from Great Britain; Ireland in particular. It was quite a bit of a distraction when listening. Especially since all of the non-speaking dialog was read in American accent.
