Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

Disappointing, below Follett standards
Revisado: 02-04-24
Definitely nothing like a good Ken Follett novel, which is filled with well-defined, interesting characters and multiple complex storylines over a long period. This was a straight story of one couple and ended when a Follett novel is usually getting up to speed. I got to end and said "Is that all there is?"

a bit tedious
Revisado: 03-28-23
Not as good as previous books in the series. Kelson spend 75% of the story mooning/whining over his love for his soul mate, a woman he can't have. A woman who insists that he can't have her, yet keeps coming back into his life to keep his feelings alive. Then towards the end, he makes a political alliance and after just a few conversations he is convinced that he will be able to love her too. Not realistic. I expected that he would make the alliance much earlier and then would've enjoyed seeing the development of their new tender relationship over the rest of the book. But more than that, I would've been happy not to listen to his constant whining. From the title you would expect that it would be a romance and you would be wrong.
Also, there is not much suspense or conflict in the book until you get about 80% in and there is the Torrenthi political activities. But it's too little, too late. And it is frustrating for Audible listeners as almost all the Torrenthi names start with Ma-- and it's difficult to tell them apart when the narrator narrator moves faster than your brain can image the name.
Otherwise, the book is a lot of narrative and ruminating in Kelson's mind and endless conversations about who is marrying whom among his relatives. Read this only if you need to satisfy yourself that Kelson becomes a happy husband.

Disappointing end to an intriguing trilogy
Revisado: 08-07-20
After sitting through 2 and 1/2 books, I was expecting a better ending. All the pain and suffering the characters went through -- and suddenly, poof, the bad guys are dead (with no effort from the good guys) and everyone is happy. It zoomed by so fast that I went back to make sure I didn't skip a couple chapters by mistake. Some story-lines were tied up with 1-2 sentences. Some were left pretty vague. I guess the author was in a hurry to either get to another book, or procrastinated too long and had to rush it too quickly to meet the publisher's deadline. Or maybe, after all these years of writing, she just ran out of creative juices and couldn't find any way to give the readers a satisfying ending .
Very sad. Those are a hundred hours of my life I will never get back.

Innocuous, at best. Boring at worst.
Revisado: 08-07-20
No plot in this first book. It's all a set-up for rest of the series. The Publisher's Summary stated: "Adventure" and "epic fantasy, time travel, romance, . . . and space colonization". That must be for all the other books, not this first one.
On the other hand, it was better than nothing on a road trip across the endlessly flat mid-West.
A series should tie up a few story-lines by the end of each book, even it keeps many others going. But this one can't do that as there is only the one story-line.
In my opinion, the author could easily have cut 75% of this book and made it the first part of a real plot. He did a lot of research on what/how you can bring modern civilization to a more primitive one. While all that research was interesting, I didn't need to hear 'all' of it. It was 90% of the book. And, as a woman, I got tired of hearing about 'bouncing breasts' since the author seems to assume women wore no breast support before western civilization developed corsets. That part he 'should' have researched.
On the other hand, there are worse books to listen to if you have a very long, boring drive. You will just need more caffeine to stay awake.

Love them all; don't pass on reading them.
Revisado: 07-05-20
I love all the Night Watch books. Well written, clever, witty. All the superlatives you read in the other reviews are correct,. There's not much point in saying more of the same. Except that you don't want to pass on reading these.
All Terry Pratchett books are great, but these are the cream of the crop.

Really 4.5 stars
Revisado: 07-05-20
I have read the entire series and love them. The second one is a bit un-even, but the rest are great, so don't let it stop you. It's great to see the growth and development of the woman protagonist. I assume the author considers her a secondary character, but her experiences adopting to Roman 'civilization' and her frequent spot-on comments are often more enjoyable than the story itself.

Really liked the entire series
Revisado: 07-05-20
I like the author's Molly Murphy books, but when I tried a couple others, I was disappointed. I took a chance on Evan and was pleasantly surprised. All the books were enjoyable with the right amount of character development and suspense for me. I hope there are more someday.

Couldn't finish it
Revisado: 07-05-20
I mostly enjoyed the first book, but couldn't get into this second one. It was too different from the second; it did not appeal. I sort of got the feeling it was going to be more 'filler' setting up for book three.

Meh
Revisado: 07-05-20
I tried to like it. I read most of this, but 3/4 the way through, I realized I just didn't care about the character, so I stopped. I didn't find her appealing and I wasn't interested in her problems. Plus a government that chooses their leaders based on single combat isn't realistic, nor interesting. Except maybe for Hunger Games fans.

It's 1194, and Sir Faucon de Ramis, the shire's newly appointed keeper of the pleas, must do his duty and make an official declaration of the cause of a miller's death. Saddled with a clerk who names Faucon his "penance", the shire's first crowner must thread the tangled relationships between the sheriff, the village of Priors Holston, and the priory that once ruled it. As a simple task takes a turn to the political, what seems obvious isn't, and what appears safe turns out to be more dangerous than he could imagine.

Good story, good characters. I'd really only give it 3.5 stars, but my standards are higher than many people. This book is average; I think the other books in the series are better.
