First time reading Cosby—his pacing, character development, and treatment of each character’s individuality was flawless, engrossing, and visceral but respectful. Cosby is a gifted writer with a rare sensitivity that does not seem pandering or tone deaf. Narration was perfectly matched to the story; another voice likely could not accomplish the text to the same degree of impact. 10/10

Excellent story. Malerman’s style is unique; as in his other novels, further elements of unease/dread are added through his fluid pacing, restrained delivery of context, and highly imaginative plotting. While readers will naturally enjoy some of his works more than others, each novel offers something truly refreshing and unexpected. Can’t wait for the next.

I enjoyed this novel, my first Dan Chaon title. Massive foreboding throughout the course of the multiple narratives, and leaves you with a sense of acute discomfort. The threads that are pulled in the dissection of the Tillman family’s lives stop maddeningly short of fully unraveling. You have to just sit with the same weight of unanswered questions that will never be reconciled. Very well done, exceedingly disorienting.

I have been on a Nevill sprint recently, and have really come to enjoy his work. This novel did not follow the trajectory I had initially anticipated—honestly, I started listening and subsequently “shelved” it in less than thirty minutes. However, the title kept popping up in every “what’s your favorite/most disturbing/genuinely scary horror read…” post on Reddit, and it seemed worthwhile to continue on. Great read if you enjoy mounting dread, despicable characters, great narration, and haunting passages that are likely to linger in the minds of most.

On to the next Nevill!
