Historia
In this volume of The Flashman Papers, Flashman, the arch-cad and toady, matches his wits, his talents for deceit and malice, and above all his speed in evasion against the most brilliant European statesman and against the most beauiful and unscrupulous adventuress of the era. From London gaming-halls and English hunting-fields to European dungeons and throne-rooms, he is involved in a desperate succession of escapes, disguises, amours and (when he cannot avoid them) hand-to-hand combats. All the while, the destiny of a continent rests on his broad and failing shoulders.

I did not like the main character at all
Revisado: 04-28-25
The main character Flashman wined incessantly through this book. He was such a lowly debased coward it was hard to like anything about him. I prefer the other Flashman written by Robert Brightwell. He’s supposed to be Flashman nephew or something but those books are much better. I shall go back to that series and forget these.

Too long and too many coincidences
Revisado: 04-19-25
The book started well with good character development. I really liked Desmond and Peytons characters. However, i never really figured out all the relationships. At one point i thought maybe the Looking Glass was a time travel machine as i could not understand how so many people continents apart seemed to know each other. I thought the stories premise was good, but the book was slow. i nearly gave up at one point but there was just enough to keep me interested. The ending was a bit of a letdown leaving too much unresolved. I suppose it should encourage you to get the next book but for me it puts me off, as the next book will probably end the same way. Anyway, it's a well written book but there's not enough to encourage me to continue the series and it's not a book i would recommend.

What a great book
Revisado: 03-28-25
What can I say? A great story, wonderful characters and excellent narration. One of the best books I have listened to. When I started I thought I would struggle with the length of the book (over 30 hours) but it flew by. Highly recommend.

Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Sark fest
Revisado: 03-12-25
I did not like this book much but I did finish it. The continuous sarcastic dialog between actors became very irritating after a while; like a bunch of 15 year old kids. I did nor care much for any of the characters except the helicopter pilot ( I can’t remember his name) he was terrific. The narrator did a great job with him. In regard to the narrator, clearly he is very good but the continuous changes in volume and pitch made it hard to listen to without keep changing the volume. It was less of a problem with a head set on. Overall I was pretty disappointed I expected a lot more from this author.

Good story but started too slow
Revisado: 02-22-25
I struggled to get though this one. It was a good story but too many words. There were too many detours into irrelevant detail. I felt like scenes were dragged out. The book would haven better if it had been cut by 25%. I would not recommend.

Not bad but not enough to draw me in
Revisado: 02-11-25
I did enjoy the book but it did not leave me wanting more. The MC was a like-able personality. At times he did seem wiser than his years. He used his cunning to get around the problem of not having a soul (which really meant his magic was stunted to the point where he would not mature). The narrator did a good job and the story was interesting but there was just not enough to move me on to next book in the series.

Historia
Vienna-June 1804. At the glittering debut of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony, a Spanish diplomat meets with Captain Thomas Grey, agent of His Majesty's Secret Service. In exchange for a gigantic bribe, the Spaniard discloses Spain's most closely-held secret, the terms of its San Ildefonso Treaty with France. Spain's neutrality in Napoleon's war on Britain is only a ruse to keep the British navy from attacking the last great treasure-armada, now gathering in South America.

I just finished the first 3 books and I have to say I really enjoyed them. The MC Thomas Gray is very like able ; full of honor, courage and respect. Be prepared though as Thomas is a bit of a super man, there’s not much he won’t try or he can’t do.
These books are not pure naval books like Hornblower or Thomas Kydd but have more in common with the Aubrey/Maturin books that were centered around Dr Maturins espionage. Overall I really liked them and I will be looking for the next in the series when it’s available.

Historia
In the small coastal city of Oran, Algeria, rats begin rising up from the filth, only to die as bloody heaps in the streets. Shortly after, an outbreak of the bubonic plague erupts and envelops the human population. Albert Camus' The Plague is a brilliant and haunting rendering of human perseverance and futility in the face of a relentless terror born of nature.

Too slow not enough action
Revisado: 01-20-25
I can tell it’s a work of art but I like a bit more action. It felt like a documentary, which it was probably meant to. I listened to about 2 hours then I just got bored. Not for me.

Historia
It is 1780, and 17-year-old Alan Lewrie is a brash, rebellious young libertine. So much so that his callous father believes a bit of naval discipline will turn the boy around. Fresh aboard the tall-masted Ariadne, Midshipman Lewrie heads for the war-torn Americas, finding - rather unexpectedly - that he is a born sailor, equally at home with the randy pleasures of the port and the raging battles on the high seas. But in a hail of cannonballs comes a bawdy surprise.

Bawdy Tales of a reluctant sailor
Revisado: 01-18-25
I really enjoyed this book. The quality of the writing was outstanding, a good mix of drama, action and humor. The MC was a somewhat likeable rogue and i will be interested to see how his character develops in the series. The only thing I did not particularly care for were the raunchy sex scenes, I thought they were a bit overdone and cheapened the book a bit.
I thought this first book was on par with the Aubry/Machurin, Thomas Kydd and Hornblower books, Let’s hope the series can sustain the excellence achieved in this first book. Highly recommend.

Good but not enough to draw me in
Revisado: 01-12-25
Overall I liked the story. The premise was interesting. The MC was likeable, some of the other navy characters were colorful. I could get behind the characters and I wanted them to succeed. The book was a bit slow at the beginning and I felt that it needed a bit more action. I thought the budding love affair between the captain and the nurse was out of place. Having finished the book I am tepid about starting the next book. If I can get it on sale I might proceeed with the series.
