I did take anything from this book that was poignant or life changing, but I consume a lot of self development books. I’ll say that the reviews may not give the author enough credit because while she is rather self promoting and probably speaks in too many absolutes about topics that have a lot of gray area (psychological issues, vulnerability), she knows her audience. This book is really for (mostly mid to upper class) women who are new to goal setting and self development. You have to look at this book for what it is. It’s the author’s story and her opinion about many topics of insecurity. She’s not a nutritionist. She’s not a personal trainer. She’s not a trained therapist. She’s not a marriage counselor. She’s not a life coach.
Though she often comes off as trying to be an expert on those topics, she never actually claims to be, so you just need to recognize that going in. I simply didn’t resonate with her story. I found that she spoke with too much hyperbole and it felt like she was discharging her embarrassing onto me vs sharing them to try and connect. To quote Brené Brown, it often felt like she was using vulnerable vs being vulnerable. I don’t want to take away from her story or the troubles she’s overcome, but I’ve just found more authors who are deeper and more authentic that I gravitate towards more than her. I think she should concentrate more about her success as a media mogul and less as a self development author.

One dimensional characters and very catty relationships

I loved Luckiest Girl Alive, so I had high hopes for this one and was sorely disappointed. All the characters were very one dimensional and not likable. All the cattiness between the characters was very juvenile and immature and I found myself tuning out quite often. It read like a lower tier reality show you’d find on Bravo. And I know it’s based on a reality show, but it didn’t feel like we were getting a behind the scenes look at all. Everything that happened in the story felt very forced, predictable, or unbelievable. Even though Luckiest Girl Alive had somewhat similar characters, the main character had so many layers that it made her compelling. Unfortunately, I will be returning this book and will not be recommending it.

The idea of this book was good because a survival at sea story is super interesting. However, I can’t say that it kept my attention. There were a lot of nautical terms I didn’t know and that knowledge might have made the story better. Overall, I hate to say it, but I was bored.

It was just too childish for me. I didn't really like the characters and the plot had a lot of holes.

Protagonist was too much of a martyr. Too much hyperbole

Narrator: unfortunately her accents were so distracting and poorly done, so it made it difficult to pay attention. She also had an odd cadence that made her dialogue seem unnatural.
Story: I just didn't find the protagonist or the story believable. The amount of abuse she received as a result of a serial killer husband was way too far fetched. Plus, the protagonist was so much of a martyr that half the time I wanted to yell "please get over yourself." There was also far too much hyperbole in here for me. Constant references about she must continue on for her kids at any cost, her pain wasn't anything compared to her kids, etc. became so excessive that it just felt like the protagonist wanted the readers to believe she was such a good mother vs that she was in fact a good mother. I'm returning it.

What disappointed you about The Last One?

The female narrator was very distracting. She always sounded like she was about to cry. The constant quiver in her voice caused me to stop paying attention. The idea for the plot was great, but I didn't root for the protagonist at all. She was like white noise. There were so many times where it seemed the storyline seemed so obvious and yet the main character just kept ignoring the clues for what seemed like no good reason. Plus, there seemed to be this issue with not saying her name, but again, the writer seemed to force the fact that we weren't supposed to know the protagonist's name and kept finding awkward ways to cause people to refer to her as "that woman," or "the blond." It just didn't seem genuine. The story also just kept dragging.

What could Alexandra Oliva have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I wanted to like and root for Zoo. However, I didn't. She seemed to blend into the background...like scenery. There was nothing intriguing or special about her. I would have also like to actually see a plot that didn't feel as forced and unbelievable. I mean, a bus full of dead children were "props." Come on!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mike Chamberlain and Nicol Zanzarella ?

Mike Chamberlain did fine, but the narrator from the Gone Girl book was so much better.

What character would you cut from The Last One?

Zoo! Unfortunately, she was the least interesting character even though she was the protagonist.

Any additional comments?

Unfortunately, I would not recommend this book.

Poorly narrated, implausible plot line

Narrator: She wasn't necessarily bad at telling the story, but the voices she created for the characters, especially the male characters, were so distracting. The males all sounded like they had scratchy throats and the accents she'd use for some of the characters were only used sometimes. Unfortunately I will not listen to another book with this narrator.

Plot: it was very simplistic, to the point of being unbelievable. The way the characters "found out" information was very far fetched. It made me consider becoming a criminal because it's apparently very easy to commit crimes and elude police.

Characters: They were not likable or relatable. I did not find myself rooting for the protagonist as I'd expected.

I don't recommend this book for people who enjoy clever mysteries and thrillers.
