Disliked the descriptive sex scenes and language. I would have enjoyed it more if so.e of the terminology was different.

I enjoyed meeting the Thompson family. The mystery of who was after them and why was well-plotted. I was drawn into the story and very much enjoyed the story. The narration was wee-paced with great voices and accents.

This is the 7th book in the Vineyard Sunset series and I recommend you read or listen to them in order. In this book there are break ups, new loves, family situations and continued growth. I enjoy spending time with this family as it is realistic and somewhat relatable. The characters are all wonderful with their own personal issues, but family is everything. They say your can't go home again, but in this series. they all do. The narration by Erin Bennett was wonderful. She has a pleasant voice to listen to and although she doesn't necessarily give each character their own voice, it is obvious whose POV it is. Her tone and expression add to the enjoyment of the book.

The Turncoat is the 3rd book in The Rebels and Redcoats Saga, but technically the 4th book as there is a full length prequel. It is really important that you read or listen to these books in order. The Turncoat has adventure, danger, passion (steam), family issues, war/battles, revenge, greed, power and more. The story is set in 1777 when there is war between the tribes brought on by siding with either the rebels or the redcoats during the American Revolution. John and Dellis have not had and easy road to romance, but they have gotten married in Dellis’ Oneida Village. He also wants to get married in the church and plans are being made, but, there are people who want John either dead, in prison, on a ship back to Scotland or married to someone else and things get out of hand. You need to read or listen to this one to find out what happens to John, Dellis and their friends.
The Redcoat is historical fiction and T.J. London does a great job mixing the two. A lot of what happened in history to women and the native people is hard to read, but it is realistic. Women were possessions or they were something to be used, Native people were expendable savages and there are some difficult scenes to read. I haven’t read a lot about the American Revolution especially where the native people were involved and I have learned a lot. Although Independence was declared in 1776, there were still a lot of things happening that come to closure in this book. I enjoyed the fictional part with several characters and their relationships adding to this story. I can’t say enough about the narration of this book and series. They have a full cast of characters and they do an amazing job. I’m not going to list them all here, but suffice it to say, if you enjoy historical fiction, especially American History before, during and after the American Revolution, then I recommend you listen to this series, you won’t be disappointed.

Great Contemporary Fiction, An interesting summer

I love Elin Hilderbrand's beach stories, but I never read The Beach Club, her debut book, until now. The Beach Club the story of the Nantucket Beach Club, a beachside hotel, and the people that own it, work at it or visit. There are several dramas unfolding throughout the book and I am not going to list them all. The main character is Mack Petersen, the manager of the hotel. He has been working for Bill Elliot, the owner, and his wife for twelve years. He has been living with beautiful Maribel for the last six years and wants to get married. Bill's health isn't good and he is ready for his daughter Cecily to take over, but she is in love and wants to head to Rio to meet up with her boyfriend. Love O'Donnell, the new front desk person and is on the island to find a hook up. She wants a child, but not a relationship. Vance, the African-American bellman, has hated Mack since the day Mack stole his job 12 years ago. All of this and more comes to a head in one summer.

I really liked this story and was impressed that this was her debut. There were times I liked various characters and then disliked them in the next chapter. There were a lot of characters in the story that played a part in the mess that was that summer, but it was realistic. Throughout the book, there are letters passing back and forth between Bill and the mysterious SBT about the selling of the hotel, but Bill won't budge. We do find out who SBT is at the end of the book. There is a lot of soul searching and decisions to be made. There is love, romance, angst, lies, secrets and more that all pull together to create a great story. I'm glad I finally listened this debut novel. I found the narration enjoyable listening at 1.6X. The voices and expression made the story more interesting for me.

Another Great Lottie Parker Story

The Stolen Girls is the second book in the D.I. Lottie Parker series and can be read as a standalone. In this outing, Lottie is in a rush to get back to work after a prolonged leave of absence to deal with the aftermath of the last case she solved. On her way out, she runs into a woman and child at her door, a woman who doesn't speak English. She hands Lottie an envelop with a note written in another language. Lottie rushes her off and heads to work. The case she ends up dealing with is one of a woman buried at a construction site. When she gets someone to translate the note, it is a request to find a young woman. Is this the person who the young woman was looking for? When another body turns up in a similar manner, found by the same man, Lottie knows they need to figure this one out before more bodies are found. When two more woman go missing, a friend of Lottie's daughter and the woman who originally came to her door, the case heats up. The investigation leads to a resettlement center, and Lottie is sure the administrator, Dan Russell, is hiding something. Will they find the missing women before one of them shows up buried in at another construction site?

Wow, this one kept me on the edge of my seat. This is the second case that comes close to home for Lottie. Somehow, her dead husband was connected to the missing girl and Lottie needs to figure out how? Her daughter is keeping secrets that are dangerous and the child of the missing woman ends up living with Lottie and her family. Once again, the crimes are serious yet timely. The story begins in Kosovo and the prologue is hard to read. I thought I knew how it all fit together, but I was only partially correct. Dealing with trafficking, stolen organs, rape and self-harm there are some heavy issues covered in this book. We get to know more about Boyd in this book, and learn about his past and marriage, as well as information about Adam, Lottie's husband. All this is written in a way that meshes the information and stories well. My heart broke for little Milot. He was in a strange country and now his mother is missing. What is the connection with Andri Petrovci, the man from Kosovo who found the first two bodies? The Stolen Girls is a well written, fast paced, and thrilling police procedural with a lot of twists thrown in. Once again I will say parts of this book are difficult to read and may trigger some readers. Once again the narration by Michele Moran is well done and adds much to the story. If you enjoy audiobooks, I recommend you give this one a listen, otherwise, pick it up and get prepared for a twisty ride.

Detective Chief Inspector Erika Foster is still trying to get back on the Murder Investigation Team (MIT) after being removed due to her abrasive behaviour. When a badly battered body of a woman is found in a dumpster, Erika is the first on the scene and wants the case. She is sure it is connected to a body that was found a few months earlier and wants to investigate. Due to bad luck on the part of Superintendent Sparkes, she gets her team back including Peterson, Moss, and Crane and they are on the case. When a third, then fourth woman is grabbed while on a date, the case heats up. All the victims have long dark hair, are attractive, and are planning to meet with someone they met online. A slash of the femoral artery, following a beating, is the cause of death in each case. Erika and the team needs to find answers fast before they have a fourth dead body on their hands.

The story is written in a way that the reader knows who the killer is and what his motivation is as well. The gripping part of this story is whether or not he will be caught before her kills another woman. The story alternates between the police investigation and the killer's activities. The description of the his step-by-step method of tracking, luring, and torturing his victims ratchets up the tension. The police procedures were also well planned following steps such as cameras (public and private), checking social media, interviews, intuition and a bit of luck. I like that we begin to see a softening to Erika. She is still tenacious and short-tempered, but not quite as abrasive as she had been. A bit or romance might be softening her a bit. This is a fast paced story, that kept me listening most of the day. I like the balance of work and personal, although this investigation kept them working crazy hours as they raced against the clock. Although this crime thriller can be read alone, I recommend you read this series in order to get the full picture of this team and the character development of Erika Foster. I definitely recommend this book and series to those who like detective stories, police procedurals and crime fiction. Once again I listened to this book narrated by Jan Cramer. She has given voice to Erika and I can imagine anyone else narrating this series.

Erika Foster at her best!

Erika Foster is no longer on the Murder Investigation Team in Lewishham Row, as she's been seconded and transferred to the Bromley Police Station working in the CID Division fighting organized crime. When they get a tip about drugs hidden in a disused quarry, the team heads off to find this evidence to put a notorious drug dealer away. While searching the bottom of the quarry, they find both the drugs and something else. The divers bring up the skeletal remains of a child, who turns out to be the body of a 7 year old girl who has been missing for twenty-six years. Erika begins to investigate the murder and disappearance, but someone doesn't want this cold case to be solved. Erika seeks out Amanda Baker, the original detective on the case, now retired. What is she hiding?

I am really enjoying getting back into this series. Erika is not easy to like. She is prickly, can be rude and arrogant, likes to be alone and is self-flagellating, blaming herself for the death of her husband. But, in her job, she is a great detective. She is tenacious, thorough, supportive and has great intuition. It was interesting to see her with her sister, Lenka, and Lenka's children. She loved them, but had a hard time dealing with having them in such close proximity. She gets frustrated easily, but who wouldn't? Overall, she is a great character, multi-dimensional and one I cheer for. Her team, Moss and Peterson are there as supporting characters as well as Isaac, the pathologist. The introduction of Amanda Baker shows us what happens when police can't solve that case and it eats at them for years. As the investigation progressed, I just couldn't wrap my head around this crime and how the family reacted, perhaps it was the only way they could deal with it? The plot of this story was well developed and kept me guessing. I had no idea what had happened and was listening intently to see if there were clues I had missed. This is a police procedural that is well presented, and I enjoyed how this investigation panned out, even though I was surprised by the conclusion. It was fast paced and never lagged, which made the story seem a lot shorter than it really was. I definitely recommend this series and can't wait to catch up.

The audiobook is narrated by Jan Cramer, one performer who I very much enjoy. She gives voice to the various characters and pulled me right into this story. I hope to continue to listen to this series and this wonderful narrator.

Historical Fiction at its best, great cast

I enjoy historical fiction and it is nice to learn about various times besides WW2, which is the subject of many of the books I read. The Rebels and Redcoats Saga is centered around The American Revolution, and Man of War is the prequel,

Another reviewer uses the word "Passion" to describe this story and it is very fitting. There is a lot of passion between India and Merrick, India is passionate to get revenge and the crew of the Boudica is passionate about catching the pirates. There are a lot of characters in this story, so it is fitting there is a full cast narrating this story. The treatment of women is very true to the period. They are either marriageable or they are used as whores. There are some scenes that might make some people uncomfortable, but they are not long. I really liked the character of Caroline/India. She is young but learns from what she has gone through. She is brave, sometimes foolish rushing in, smart, a quick learner and wants to be able to take care of herself. She doesn't want to depend on a man and feels dirty and tainted, not good enough for anyone anymore. Merrick is also headstrong, protective, emotional, persistent and brave. He is trying to clear his family name, and finds out that the plot against the king is being backed by his oldest brother, who he does not speak to. Can he foil the plot of the Jacobites, help India get revenge, clear his family name and Captain his own ship, something he really wants to do. Secondary characters are many that we met in The Tory and The Traitor, so it was interesting to see where and how they started on the paths they take in the future.

This is a long audiobook at almost 23 hours, but it went by quickly as there was so much action and adventure. The ensemble cast of narrators were excellent giving voice to the individual characters. With accents, gender, and age, each character was easily identified. I definitely recommend this audiobook to those who enjoy history, especially American History, and enjoy audiobooks as well.
