Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Historia
Makoto Saigo is half-American and half-Japanese in small-town Japan with a set of talents limited to playing guitar and picking fights. With rock stardom off the table, he turns toward the only place where you can start from the bottom and move up through sheer merit, loyalty, and brute force―the yakuza. Saigo, nicknamed “The Tsunami”, quickly realizes that even within the organization, opinions are as varied as they come, and a clash of philosophies can quickly become deadly. One screw-up can cost you your life, or at least a finger.

Historia
In the 1940s and '50s, a group of eccentric geniuses - led by John von Neumann - gathered at the newly created Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Their joint project was the realization of the theoretical universal machine, an idea that had been put forth by mathematician Alan Turing. This group of brilliant engineers worked in isolation, almost entirely independent from industry and the traditional academic community. But because they relied exclusively on government funding, the government wanted its share of the results....

If you want to know why the modern world is the way it is, you’ll want to read tbos
Revisado: 12-25-24
“Turning’s Cathedral” is one of the most fascinating history books I’ve read or listen to. It’s not a conventional book but Dyson’s sense of the importance of this somewhat hidden (in lain sight) history fascination with his subject, and clarity of writing will draw you in.
The metaphor of cathedral is apt, since like the peasants, craftsmen and nobility in a medieval town we all now live and work in the shadow of what Gödel, Turning, Johnny and Klari von Neumann, and the others began constructing.

Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

Terrific writing and narration. Hampton Sides tells a complex story very well. Not only is it a fascinating tale, Sides does a fine job of placing the events of Captain James Cook’s final voyage to the histories of what came before and the multiple threads of what followed in its wake and today are still playing out.

It’s u like most rockstar memoirs
Revisado: 03-08-24
For starters I’m not a died in the wool Rush fan. I enjoy some of their music and I respect them as being very talented musicians and crafters of popular songs. I never saw them live but from what I’ve seen on YouTube and as described in this book, they were a very entertaining, crowd pleasing band.
What I really liked about “My Effing Lfe” is that it is unlike most rockstar/popstar/celebrity memoirs. In those books the narrator stops being interesting petson the moment the initial struggle
stage gives way to stardom. Not so in Mr. Lee’s case.
Maybe it’s just me, but I came away with the distinct sense that as a person, Mr. Lee has never stopped growing as a person, and that he’s enjoying the journey. He’s still finding things out, about the world, about the people around him, and about himself. And he’s come through the trials of success, failure, and loss, with a multi-hued sense of humor.
So even if you, like me, are not a rabid Rush fan, I think you’ll enjoy this audiobook.

A fantastic novel
Revisado: 01-15-24
The characters and the ideas are first rate as is the authors way of discussing them and letting them evolve, layer, and then come together in ways I did not anticipate. The author has a great sense of irony and expresses it well. All in all a worthy addition to my library.

Historia
Acclaimed actress Claire Danes burnishes an epic story of heroes, gods, and monsters in a groundbreaking translation of The Odyssey, the first great adventure story in the Western literary tradition. When the wily warrior-king Odysseus sets off for home after the Trojan War, he doesn’t realize this simple undertaking will become a perilous journey of 10 years. Beset at every turn, he encounters obstacles, detours, and temptations—both supernatural and human—while his wife Penelope fends off would-be suitors desperate to take the throne.
