When Hollywood auctioneer Emsley Wilson finds her famous grandmother's diary while cleaning out her New York brownstone, the pages are full of surprises. The first surprise is, the diary isn't her grandmother's. It belongs to Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh's sister-in-law.

Engaging story
Revisado: 10-27-24
Loved the story--a lot of interesting historical and artistic detail. Could've used another narrator--she sounded like a sorority girl reading it. Very breathy and superficial.

Historia
It is the summer of 1919, and Constance Haverhill is without prospects. Now that all the men have returned from the front, she has been asked to give up her cottage and her job at the estate she helped run during the war. While she looks for a position as a bookkeeper or—horror—a governess, she’s sent as a lady’s companion to an old family friend who is convalescing at a seaside hotel. Despite having only weeks to find a permanent home, Constance is swept up in the social whirl of Hazelbourne-on-Sea after she rescues the local baronet’s daughter, Poppy Wirrall, from a social faux pas.

Wonderful book!
Revisado: 05-27-24
I hadn't realized that the book was written by Helen Simonson, author of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. As with the previous book, the characters are absolutely wonderful, the plot is engaging and interesting and I only wish I could read it again for the first time. Narration was beautifully done. Highly recommend.

I couldn't keep going
Revisado: 08-21-23
This was one of the most depressing books I've ever started. I made it about 2 hours through--maybe less, maybe it just felt like hours--but couldn't go on. I understand books about WWII are going to be sad, but this was dark, dark, dark. And I was left without hope. Couldn't do it. Maybe you'd like it, though.

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Pretty good story, pretty flat narration
Revisado: 07-20-23
I like Maura Tierney as an actress (though I think I only saw her on ER) but the narration of this book was flat. It sounded like the characters didn't care about anything which...well, some of them didn't. The story is a testament to how your parents can screw you up, but also shows the potential for things getting better. It was fairly good except for the performance.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Fantastic book with wonderful narrators
Revisado: 04-26-23
Part hero's journey, part magic and absolutely full of love and compassion. Wonderful book. Must've been beautifully written--the translation sings. The narration is perhaps the best I've ever heard in an audio book. It's one of those books that I wish I could discover afresh again.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

And a History of "Lost" Women
Revisado: 07-18-22
What a wonderful book, showing how women have been disregarded through history, and how little women's history has mattered to men. The author, with this moving story, reminds us that just because we haven't been quoted in dictionaries and histories as much, it doesn't mean we haven't had important and deep lives. It brought out the feminist in me, but also reminded me that there are men who walk the path with us rather than pushing us aside. The narration was perfect, other than the fact that I'd like to tweak her Esperanto pronunciation, but then I've never spoken to a British person in Esperanto before and am not sure about the nuances of their pronunciation. But the book and the narrator are a perfect match. Highly recommend the book and the recording.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Great book, lackluster narrator
Revisado: 06-01-22
Wonderful book. The characters are terrific and well-written. The story is absorbing. It re-ignites my feminism and so many things described made me think, "Yes, that happened to me, too." It may seem irrelevant to younger women, but it rang completely true for me. The narrator needs some help pronouncing names and words--Jack Lanne and abiogenesis, specifically. I found her narration more flat that I'd have liked, but it didn't spoil it for me. Great listen.

Convoluted and self-absorbed
Revisado: 02-15-22
I love time-travel books. This one was convoluted and the characters were so wrapped up in themselves that I literally stopped listening ten minutes before the end because I realized I didn't care. Not sure why some of the characters spoke with nasal congestion--seemed to be a "feature". Boring, unending. I made it end.

Combine every Lifetime movie you've ever seen
Revisado: 01-01-22
This book was so sweet and predictable I couldn't wait for it to end. The only thing I really liked were the references to other (much better) books. You knew, as you met each character, what their fate would be at the end.

Love the book, can't stand the narrator
Revisado: 11-03-21
This is a well-written and interesting story. The characters are good. The narration was really bad. The narrator made the main character sound like a total air-head. She wasn't. She got herself out of a very bad place and deserved to be portrayed as a strong human being, not a breathy idiot. I listened to an hour, couldn't stand it but wanted to know how it turned out so I read it on my Kindle, instead. Much better choice.
