Historia
Approximately 200,000 years ago, as modern humans began to radiate out from their evolutionary birthplace in Africa, Neanderthals were already thriving in Europe - descendants of a much earlier migration of the African genus Homo. But when modern humans eventually made their way to Europe 45,000 years ago, Neanderthals suddenly vanished.

Lots of Neanderthals and Humans, Dogs Not So Much
Revisado: 07-23-24
This is a good book. It's full of facts on Neanderthals, Early Modern Humans, predators and prey and invasive species. I picked up this book hoping for more info on the domestication of dogs and early dog/human interaction. Shipman brings the dogs into the narrative in the last ~25% of the book. She has interesting and well reasoned and researched hypothesizes but unprovable at this point in time. Shipman freely admits this and is hopeful that evidence will be unearthed in the future,
All in all, a good read, just not enough info on early dogs

Very educational, very detailed, very long. Adam Smith presents a cogent argument against debt and living beyond ones mean either has a country or by an individual. I would suggest an abridged version.

Historia
Just over 125,000 years ago, humanity was going extinct until a dramatic shift occurred—Homo sapiens started tracking the tides in order to eat the nearby oysters. Before long, they’d pulled themselves back from the brink of extinction. The human brain, and its evolutionary journey, is unlike anything else in history. In A History of the Human Brain, Bret Stetka takes listeners through that far-reaching journey. He also tackles the question of where the brain will take us next, exploring the burgeoning concepts of epigenetics and new technologies like CRISPR.

Good overview of brain evolution. Stetka's jokes fall a bit flat. I doubt if some of the statements will stand the test of time.

Historia
On a planet where life is cheap, in a city built on corruption, very few things are considered holy. The Landing Site is one of them. The remains of the century-old habitat pod—which delivered the colonists to the only barely habitable place on the cruel world of Croatoan—has become a monument to the hardscrabble people who somehow survived the unsurvivable. So when blood is shed on that sacred ground, it’s seen as an attack against the entire colony.

Short, nice setup to expanding Five Point World
Revisado: 05-23-23
A nice Science Fiction police procedural. More of a novella than a novel but I'll take what I can get from Correia. The narrator has become the voice that my mind calls up for DCI Cade and a number of other Correia characters. Bravo on the narration.
Now Audible sucks for forcing reviews before leaving stars. ONE F'ing STAR AUDIBLE!

Historia
In this definitive and long-awaited biography, Jonathan Edwards emerges as both a great American and a brilliant Christian. George Marsden evokes the world of colonial New England in which Edwards was reared - a frontier civilization at the center of a conflict between Native Americans, French Catholics, and English Protestants. Drawing on newly available sources, Marsden demonstrates how these cultural and religious battles shaped Edwards' life and thought.

This book is a nice overview of Edwards as a man of his times. Well worth the time for listening.
And on audible procedures: I think it really sucks that I can’t just rate by stars, after listening, and that I must write something. Poor way of doing business…

A Fun Ride with the Gang...
Revisado: 03-10-23
Abbey's descriptions of the landscape of the west is always beautiful even when he is being snarky. This novel brings us up to date on the gang and moves the story forward. It's a fun read but it's not nearly as much fun as the Monkey Wrench Gang.

C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and the Inklings met each week to read and discuss each other's work-in-progress, offering both encouragement and blistering critique. How did these conversations shape the books they were writing? How does creative collaboration enhance individual talent? And what can we learn from their example? Bandersnatch offers an inside look at the Inklings of Oxford, and a seat at their table at the Eagle and Child pub.

Historia
Jubal Early (1816-1894) fought two big wars during his life. About 150 years ago, Early played an important role as a general for the Confederacy, fighting his way up the ranks until he was eventually given an independent command by top Confederate general Robert E. Lee in late 1864. However, it was Early's writing that truly changed history. During the 1870s, Early was one of the writers for the Southern Historical Society who helped establish the Lost Cause.

Not a biography of Early or a treatise on the Lost Cause. There are a couple of paragraphs about the 1864 Valley Campaign and then Early is suddenly in Mexico at the end of the war. It seems the Charles River Editors skimmed the Time Life Civil War Series and wrote a C level book report. Not worth the time to listen.

Historia
When the biggest colony ship in human history was sent to settle a paradise world, an accident hurtled it deep into uncharted space. A thousand light years from Earth, with no way home and no way to call for help, the colonists’ only hope for survival was the one barely habitable planet in range, a nightmare world they named Croatoan. Landing on the only five mountain peaks tall enough to rise above the lethal acid clouds, the settlers carved a civilization from the rock.
