Historia
When Redwall was published in 1987 it catapulted author Brian Jacques to international stardom. And small wonder! This enthralling tale is jam-packed with the things we long for in a great adventure: danger, laughter, hairbreadth escapes, tragedy, mystery, a touch of wonder, a truly despicable villain, and a hero we can take to heart.

Great story and narrator; bad voice cast
Revisado: 02-03-21
Brian Jacques' stories deserve great audiobooks. Red wall gets about half of one with a great narrator. The voice cast is amateurish at best and unlistenable at worst.

Science fiction allows us to go places we can only dream of seeing - other worlds, distant stars, entirely different galaxies. While not every story is concerned with the hard science behind space travel and other futuristic ventures, fiction can give us amazing insight into what we could be capable of and what we dream of doing. In these 10 lectures, Professor Erin Macdonald interweaves real science and the achievements of the imagination to reveal the truth that underlies our favorite stories and sheds light on what the future may hold.

Not a "great course" for sci-fi fans
Revisado: 09-08-20
I've seen other reviews here categorize this as "bare bones" and "primer" material, and I'd have to agree. There are a lot of passing reference to science fiction titles, and no more science than you'd get from an average NOVA episode - actually, probably a lot less. At no point did I feel was listening to an academic lecture or even more-than-casual interest rundown of some tech used in some well-known sci-fi plots.

Historia
Located off a desolate stretch of Interstate 50, Desperation, Nevada, has few connections with the rest of the world. It is a place, though, where the seams between worlds are thin. And it is a place where several travelers are abducted by Collie Entragian, the maniacal police officer of Desperation. Entragian uses various ploys for the abductions, from an arrest for drug possession to "rescuing" a family from a nonexistent gunman.

Great listen
Revisado: 09-08-20
I'd listen to Stephen King read a phone book, let alone one of his own novels. The only disappointment in Desperation is there are no great Old Mainer characters for him to drawl his way through. Great recording of a fantastic book.

Historia
Peaceful suburbia on Poplar Street in Wentworth, Ohio, takes a turn for the ugly when four vans containing armed "regulators" terrorize the street's residents, cold-bloodedly killing anyone foolish enough to step outside their homes. Houses mysteriously transform into log cabins, and the street now ends in what looks like a child's hand-drawn Western landscape. Masterminding this sudden onslaught is the evil creature Tak, who has taken over the body of an autistic eight-year-old boy, Seth Garin.

Over the top and fantastic
Revisado: 09-08-20
Normally, I'm one of the minority who doesn't always enjoy a Frank Muller performance - but he was tailor-made to read the zany, horrifying, utterly crazy story of The Regulators. Serves as a perfect counterpoint to King's own narration of the companion novel, Desperation.

Revisado: 09-08-20
The book American Psycho and the character of Patrick Bateman capture the crazed consumerism of the 80s and the detached insanity of a serial killer bred by that environment like none other. Pablo Schreiber does a great job of building his own version of Bateman.

Historia
Emmy Award winner and former CBS News anchor Dan Rather brings his unforgettable staged performance, Stories of a Lifetime, to the Minetta Lane Theatre, where it will be recorded live for Audible Theater. In this deeply personal show, the legendary Peabody Award-winning journalist takes audiences through the most pivotal moments of his life, from surviving a debilitating illness as a child in Depression-era Texas to covering monumental moments in American history such as the Civil Rights movement, the assassination of JFK, and Watergate.

Light on story, big on insights
Revisado: 09-08-20
As a live performance or reading "Stories of a Lifetime" can't by definition go too in-depth with most of the stories mentioned. In fact, Rather doesn't spend a lot of time on any one particular part of his life or major news story that he covered, so don't expect any deep dives on any topic. Instead, Rather has a few brief anecdotes and comments about his perspective of modern day America along the way. Worthwhile for listening to a legend of broadcast journalism, but it does make you wish for an autiobiography instead.

Historia
Norco '80 tells the story of how five heavily armed young men - led by an apocalyptic born-again Christian - attempted a bank robbery that turned into one of the most violent criminal events in US history, forever changing the face of American law enforcement. Part action thriller and part courtroom drama, Norco '80 transports the listener back to the Southern California of the 1970s, an era of predatory evangelical gurus, doomsday predictions, megachurches, and soaring crime rates, with the threat of nuclear obliteration looming over it all.

Meticulously recreated crime
Revisado: 07-03-20
Using four years of meticulous research, Houlahan retells the Norco robbery from the initial plan and background of the major players through their ultimate fates. The story is retold as if the reader is there, which is a unique approach to true crime and one I found refreshing. Barrett does a great job of narration.

Revisado: 04-17-20
This was a great read of the book by a great cast. For some reason Vanguard tacked on an interview with Ellis which is interesting but he only talks about Less Than Zero and American Psycho...not sure why it wasn't included with one of those books instead.

Historia
Less than 250,000 people live in the Northern Territory, an area more than twice the size of Texas. If you want to escape from civilisation, you don’t have to go far. But you can’t outrun the heat. Every year during October and November the sweltering climate can drive people wild; they call it ‘Suicide Season’, ‘Mango Madness’ or, more plainly, ‘The Build-up’. It’s during this blistering heat that Jim O’Connell’s body is found in a creek bed, mummified and with his genitals removed.

Average Audible true crime
Revisado: 03-24-20
Blood Territory is exactly like any other short true crime audio fiction being produced these days and it will sound very familiar to those who have heard other Audible Originals. If you like the writer/narrator constantly interjecting with his own thoughts and experiences instead of laying out a story for you, then this is right up your alley. Being part narration, part actual field interviews and part reenactments with actors made it especially confusing.

One of the best news/true crime experiences
Revisado: 03-11-20
Jake Adelstein's Tokyo Vice is one of the best non-fiction pieces on the life of a foreign reporter working the Tokyo crime beat in the 1990s-2000s. As a bonus, he also happens to be a great narrator, delivering the book in a conversational tone that makes it easy to follow and comprehend Japanese vocabulary. For fans of "People Who Eat Darkness" this offers another perspective on the Lucy Blackmon case from someone who was on the ground covering it when it happened. A fascinating journey. Hopefully, Adelstein will do more narration.
