When two young lovers abscond from a Puritan colony, little do they know that their humble cabin in the woods will become the home of an extraordinary succession of human and nonhuman characters alike. An English soldier, destined for glory, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to growing apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine, envy and desire. Delightful
Revisado: 04-03-25
I found this story and production to be fascinating. I don’t think I have read or listened to a book quite like this one. It is an interesting story about a piece of land and the souls who make their life there. I recommend it.

Historia
When Lydia takes a job running the Senior Citizens’ Social Club three afternoons a week, she assumes she’ll be spending her time drinking tea and playing gentle games of cards. The members of the Social Club, however, are not at all what Lydia was expecting. From Art, a failed actor turned kleptomaniac to Daphne, who has been hiding from her dark past for decades to Ruby, a Banksy-style knitter who gets revenge in yarn, these seniors look deceptively benign—but when age makes you invisible, secrets are so much easier to hide.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

I was hesitant to listen to this book. I am not a Republican. I didn’t think I could comfortably hear what Liz Cheney had to say. Both the January 6th committee, and this book are intelligent and well thought out.
The book was well organized, clear, and unsettling. I applaud Liz Cheney for her courage and willingness to stand up for our democracy. I recommend this book and I am grateful for our free press.

First published in 1962, Silent Spring can single-handedly be credited with sounding the alarm and raising awareness of humankind's collective impact on its own future through chemical pollution. No other book has so strongly influenced the environmental conscience of Americans and the world at large.

Still Relevent
Revisado: 05-15-24
I didn’t read this book in my youth, even though I studied integrated pest management and organic farming in college. I was interested in learning if this book was still relevant. It is in many ways. Sadly, some of the promising methods, such as BT have had negative side effects. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

I didn’t expect to like this book. I listened for book club. As it turned out, I loved the book. I felt deeply moved in many regards. The author did an excellent job of making Frankie’s experiences tactical and relatable. I highly recommend this book.

Karr has a punchy, gritty, unapologetic way smacking the reader/listener with her truth.
I learned many important lessons about memoir. I learned how to be a better writer. I learned to examine my own history without squinting. Now, I will feast on her memoirs. Thank you!

Historia
Until the 1970s, if you suffered a medical crisis, your chances of survival were minimal. A 9-1-1 call might bring police or even the local funeral home. But that all changed with Freedom House EMS in Pittsburgh, a group of Black men who became America’s first paramedics and set the gold standard for emergency medicine around the world, only to have their story and their legacy erased—until now.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Harry’s Perspective
Revisado: 02-19-23
I was surprised to learn the degree to which that paparazzi had ruined people’s lives. I enjoyed the opportunity to hear Prince Harry’s perspective on royal life and life in general. I was devastated to learn about the lack of support provided to William and Harry upon the death of their mother. I’m not one to hang on every word spoken about the “Royals”, but found this book to be open, honest, and interesting.

Historia
Welcome to winter in Three Pines, a picturesque village in Quebec, where the villagers are preparing for a traditional country Christmas, and someone is preparing for murder. No one liked CC de Poitiers. Not her quiet husband, not her spineless lover, not her pathetic daughter - and certainly none of the residents of Three Pines. CC de Poitiers managed to alienate everyone, right up until the moment of her death. When Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, of the Sûreté du Quebec, is called to investigate, he quickly realizes he's dealing with someone quite extraordinary.
