Excellent book, narrator…not so much
Revisado: 01-04-25
This book stands up to the rigors of the passage of time. Despite 90s-era defunct descriptors, there are so many authentic pearls of wisdom distilled into relatable story-telling. It’s also great re-read if you haven’t read it in a while.
The narrator, though…. Ouch. As a culinary school graduate and lover of books and language, the mispronunciations and sometimes strange tonal phrasing is a bit like being served a burnt parsnip chip or a tea bag soaked in cold water.

I have exactly 5 hours and 10 minutes to get from Boston to New York City or the professional opportunity of a lifetime disappears. My only travel option? The second to last seat on a discount bus. Across from the bathroom. Wearing last night’s clothes (don’t ask). All worth it if I can make it in time.

Light and Funny Meet-Cute
Revisado: 07-30-24
Perfectly light-hearted and a fun listen. No heavy drama, though also no serious character development. An easy-listening, delightful and care-free story line for when you aren’t in the mood for a heavy-hitter. Performance is great, too, a little more radio theater than a standard read-through.

Good story, annoying audio trim
Revisado: 03-26-24
Although I liked the story, I had a hard time not being annoying about the beginning of every new sequence because the narration was clipped too short and you missed the first one to two words.

Historia
Up the Down Staircase is the funny and touching story of a committed, idealistic teacher whose clash with school bureaucracy is a timeless lesson for students, teachers, parents – anyone concerned about public education. Bel Kaufman lets her characters speak for themselves through memos, letters, directives from the principal, comments by students, notes between teachers, and papers from desk drawers and wastebaskets, evoking a vivid picture of teachers fighting the good fight against all that stands in the way of good teaching.

Time tested
Revisado: 01-08-24
I couldn’t give higher praise for this book. Despite the age of the book, the every day and commonplace that frame this story are universal truths that have and continue to remain so whether we reference the times of “J. Caesar” (to quote one of Miss Barrett’s students) or modern life in a decade we haven’t yet seen. I was lucky to have more than one Miss Barrett in my own life (a well-deserved shout out to Mrs. F, Mrs. B, Miss C, and LW!)
This book was a delight, the memo-style writing and character nuance was engaging, and the narrator was excellent. Worth a re-listen!

Light, yet engaging.
Revisado: 03-24-23
I liked this book way more than I thought I would. The author is both lighthearted and serious, deftly touching on tough topics while simultaneously keeping the overall tone upbeat and playful. Combined with the excellent performance of the narrator, who is the perfect choice to straddle the various character perspectives, this book was an excellent listen I related to.
