Historia
In the summer of 1992, on the eve of an American tour, Ben Watt, one half of the Billboard-topping pop duo Everything but the Girl, was taken to a London hospital complaining of chest pain. He didn't leave for two and a half months. Watt had developed a rare life-threatening disease that initially baffled doctors. By the time he was allowed home, his ravaged body was 46 pounds lighter, and he was missing most of his small intestine.

I recommend this to my students…
Revisado: 01-20-25
I teach health care students and advise them to read/listen to this graphic, honest memoir from a patient. Hearing his words, relive what the highs and lows of illness and hospital life is like, is meaningful to those entering the profession. Knowing the author as a musician gives added depth and emotional impact. Highly recommended.

Historia
Tom Felton’s adolescence was anything but ordinary. His early rise to fame in beloved films like The Borrowers catapulted him into the limelight, but nothing could prepare him for what was to come after he landed the iconic role of the Draco Malfoy, the bleached blonde villain of the Harry Potter movies. For the next ten years, he was at the center of a huge pop culture phenomenon and yet, in between filming, he would go back to being a normal teenager trying to fit into a normal school. Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience.

Not at all what I expected
Revisado: 04-27-24
I was intrigued to read this after seeing reviews mentioning his life pre-Potter. Though I have seen Tom Felton’s role as Draco (and in earlier films which I didn’t realise were him) and viewed him as a mischievous rascal in his screen interviews, in this novel I found him to be so much more than a child actor. He recounts with beautiful insights the journey of his film career, his later breakdown and his current slow adaption into adulthood. He comes across warm and kind (and certainly a bit of a rascal) but someone I felt that in life, it would be more of a joy to know. An actor’s life is far removed from my own, but he made his own life feel as if the highs and lows he went through, were as similar to anyone else’s. His ability to discuss his loves and fears was honest and engaging. Though it was never a memoir I thought of interest by title or topic (I enjoyed the books and films but am not a ‘fan’) I would recommend this book to anyone who finds the human experience fascinating and wants to read how life unfolds, for someone who could be you, or a friend, who just happened to be an actor.
