Historia
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

Story was pretty good. Love the ingenuity with 'bread magic.' The reader's fake English accent almost made me stop.
Revisado: 11-27-24
It was some uncanny valley thing. I have consumed enough British media that I was absolutely sure she was not a native of GB immediately. I tried to convince myself that the character just talked weird. I can do a passable English accent and she is probably 'better' in some relative way but outside of annoying my children I would never fathom that I was capable of professionally reading a novel. This didn't need an English accent and, if it did, there are a plethora of British English that could have done it. Literally any English person.

Historia
What if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self—a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but, in a twisted, upside-down way, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against? Not long ago, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience—she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who.

This book has given me the vocabulary to describe what I find unfathomable in human nature
Revisado: 11-22-24
I am constantly finding myself boggled by the actions of others. This is cathartic and healing because naming it, describing it, is the first step to understanding it. Humans brains have difficulty with interpreting situations that they cannot describe. This is why there are volumes upon volumes of scholarly work on WWII and will continue to be. Truly a remarkable read. I don't want to overstate things but it's so prescient right now and I encourage you, you in particular, if you are finding yourself unmoored by current events, to pick this up and read it now.
It's always a dicey situation when an author wants to read their own book. I think of Lemony Snickett and how truly awful his reading of his work was. Writing well and speaking well are not the same. However, Ms. Klein has perfect poise and diction. It feels as though we are having a conversation; she is so comfortable with the text and her own voice. I went to look for the Shock Doctrine, which I have not read, and was disappointed to see she had not read that as well. I encourage Ms. Klein to do a new update to that book and read it. I would very much enjoy to hear it.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Not as spectacular an opening as I'd hoped
Revisado: 08-31-24
I enjoyed and finished every bit of the expanse but here I found myself bored through large portions of it. I knew some of it was important info but it was hard to understand which and why.
I was really confused by the perspective. I think it was first person throughout but seemed to jump into 3rd person omniscient sometimes without explanation. Sometimes it was difficult to know which character was being followed. Maybe there were unlabeled breaks that I wasn't following.
It set itself up reasonably well for the next books and I will be listening to the next ones when they are done.

The story gets a bit boring in parts but what an ending
Revisado: 08-15-24
The narration is Brick standard. Very smooth but Scott predates the trend of narrators adopting voices significantly different to help the listener. I am just blown away by how intelligently and yet how immensely readable Asimov's writing is. He is truly one of the greatest writers of all time and what a polymath.

To preserve knowledge and save humankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire - both scientists and scholars - and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation.

Short stories are hard over audio.
Revisado: 08-06-24
In them, every single word counts and must be listened to with a keen ear. Oftentimes you only get one chance at hearing a full name but they are then referred to both first and second name and that can get confusing fast. It also seems like Asimov trends toward very similar sounding names. Venabli and Demerzel. Seldon, Hardin, Sutton, and Sutt. I'd honestly recommend reading this.

Honestly meh. I'm not sure what all the fuss was about.
Revisado: 05-19-24
I know it's supposed to be subverting expectations but I don't know.... I kind of had the inkling in the first book that this was not for me but I soldiered on like a certain Superior we know. "Why do I read this? Why?" There is nothing technically wrong with the book it's just a story that felt meaningless and a set of characters who I don't care about. I see why people like Glokta, he's the only one that shows any growth. He's still an awful person. When I didn't know Bayaz's reasons it was at least mysterious. but now it's just meh
