I got about 25% through this book and forgot to finish reading it . . . that's how exciting and memorable the story was.

Would you listen to For Whom the Bell Tolls again? Why?

No, once is enough.

What did you like best about this story?

The historical perspective and psychology of the characters . . . although both were pretty naive.

What does Campbell Scott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great Story Teller!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It's been done.

Any additional comments?

I never realized that the Title was actually a poem by John Donne. LOVED the poem!

Would you listen to The Boys in the Boat again? Why?

An uplifting true story of a group of young men who won gold against all odds. These humble, honest, and incredibly hard working guys inspired me to reach higher in my own life. One of the best books I've ever read.

Would you consider the audio edition of Splendid Solution to be better than the print version?

This book provided a peep-show into the politics, money, and egos that mash against each other in the ivory towers of academic medicine.

From a scientific perspective, there are always inherent risks with medical interventions and vaccinations are no exception. However, this story provides a real world, poignant account of the disease alternative. A must read for all those non-scientist mothers who are choosing to not vaccinate their children.

What did you like best about The Rape of Nanking? What did you like least?

The book chronicles such an important part of world history that has mostly been ignored and needs to be told. I was unaware of the horrible events that occurred during the Japanese invasion of China in 1937 until I got this book. The sordid details are so horrendous that you only need to hear them once (if that), but the author retells the most horrific events again and again throughout the book. It was too much and I was unable to finish the book. I didn't need to be hit over the head with the blood and gore, and would have liked to hear a little more elaboration on the events leading up to an entire army turning into psychopaths of the highest order.

Blown Away by Cutting for Stone

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-14-11

Cutting for Stone was flawless on so many levels that it blew me away. The historical back drop--the last 60 years to present--of a small village in Ethiopia with ties to the United States and India was so vividly and accurately detailed that I was completely transported. Since the story takes place in a small medical facility in Ethiopia, it was critical that the medical information be correct, but also interesting to the layperson. Verghese completely succeeded on both counts. Finally, the character development and story line were perfectly executed. Mr. Verghese’s novel is so compelling on so many different levels . . . perfection!

A Different Holocaust

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 11-15-10

This book is emotionally wrenching. I cried most of the way through it. That said, it told a new story of the Holocaust. This was the Holocaust as viewed through the eyes of a poor German girl and it captivated me from beginning to end.
