Delightfully-told story full of interesting characters

I’ve listened to this audiobook at least 20 times. While I always enjoy Terry Pratchett’s work, I especially enjoy it narrated by someone who fully grasps his quirky sense of humor, pauses appropriately for the well-turned phrase, and inhabits the characters with such abandon that you feel like you can see them jump to life in front of you.

Funny, thoughtful, and a good romp through Ankh-Morpork. Highly recommended.

Wish this was read by a black WOMAN

I found this really jarring to listen to. Ron Butler is an excellent narrator, but this is written by a black WOMAN. This isn't a piece of fiction where the narrator needs to assume multiple voices of multiple genders to tell a story.

I was only able to make it through the first hour or so - hearing a male voice speaking a woman's story was too jarring. I am now reading the paper copy and attempting to return the audiobook.

Narrator doesn’t work

My 11-year-old was assigned this book for school. I previewed the paper version, and really enjoyed it. In an effort to help him get the book read in time, we tried the Audible version to listen to in the car and in the evenings at home. Unfortunately, the narrator just doesn’t work well with the story. It’s jarring to listen to, and interrupts the flow of the book. A smoother voice without the fall at the end of every word and phrase would sound better.

Poor voice actor ruined a great story

I love this series, I own all of the books, including for the following series, and the companion books Belgarath and Polgara. I’ve read each one over 20 times, probably upwards of 100 for certain books. I was really excited to share these favorite stories with my kids. I purchased the audiobook without listening to the sample. Big mistake.

Imagine my disappointment when a monotonous voice came through the speakers. It turned an exciting adventure tale into a dull recitation of facts that would do an 18th century dry dusty tutor proud. We didn’t even make it through the first chapter before I had to turn it off so I wouldn’t fall asleep while driving!

Don’t waste your credit.

Fascinating world building

This story was a fascinating dual telling of two very different storylines that eventually, inevitably collide. The story does slow a bit at points while the author explains the chemistry, biology, and social structures on the two storylines, but it’s worth it for the texture it adds to the world building.

The reader has a wonderfully flexible speaking voice with a native British accent that is able to delve into Australian and reasonable Indian and American accents to help differentiate characters.
