Fun Trip To The Balkans
Revisado: 08-20-24
I liked this book about a part of the world I'm not too familiar with. It definitely makes me want to travel to the beautiful city of Dubrovnik. I also enjoy a story told from multiple points of view, so this fits the bill there as well. The story moves along, sometimes not as fast as I'd have liked, but it's an enjoyable light read. I liked seeing the characters grow, and the friendships as well. Interesting and enjoyable.

Historia
Cornelius P. "Fatty" O'Leary and his wife, Betty, plan a vacation in Ireland for his 40th birthday, where they will tour his ancestral homeland and relax in the countryside. Almost immediately, things go terribly wrong: the seats in economy class on the plane are too small; the country hotel's dinner spread and bathroom fixtures leave much to be desired; and the down-to-earth O'Learys find their fellow guests are more than a little snobbish.

Not McCall Smith's Best
Revisado: 07-15-24
I didn't care for any of the characters in this book, except possibly Betty, Fatty's wife. Most of the people Fatty met in Ireland were either snobby or dishonest and conniving. Fatty himself seemed clueless and entitled. It was disappointing because I'm a staunch fan of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, and I also loved La's Orchestra Saves The World and the Corduroy Mansions series. At least I didn't have to buy this one, as it was a freebie from Audible.

Not Her Best
Revisado: 06-10-23
A mildly interesting story with very good narration. I learned a bit about the Huguenots, so that was good. The modern story was more interesting to me than the one from the middle ages, which was confusing to me.

Anne Tyler : My Favorite
Revisado: 10-08-21
I'm truly surprised by the many mediocre and negative reviews about this book. I loved it so much I listened to it twice. The gentle humor, memorable characters, descriptions of ordinary life that make you look at everything with fresh eyes, and the sweet story make for one of my favorite books by Anne Tyler. The narration by Kimberly Farr is superb.

This book was extremely slow paced, and the ending was very anti-climatic. I won't listen to any more of this series.

A grotesquely burned corpse found in a city park is a troubling mystery for Beijing detective Li Yan. Yan, devoted to his career as a means of restoring the respect his family lost during the Cultural Revolution, needs outside help if he is to break the case. The unidentified cadaver in turn provides a welcome distraction for forensic pathologist Margaret Campbell. Campbell, married to her work and having left America and her broken past behind, throws herself into the investigation and before long uncovers a bizarre anomaly.

I enjoyed the Beijing setting and learning more about Chinese culture. Characters were interesting and well developed. Bits of humor here and there added to the enjoyment. Narrator did a good job.

Love Crazy Becky Bloomwood!
Revisado: 11-13-16
Would you consider the audio edition of Shopaholic Ties the Knot to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, so I can't say.
What did you like best about this story?
I love the twists and turns in the story and how wacky Becky extricates herself from the messes she makes for herself. I love a story that makes me laugh and this series never fails to deliver.
What does Emily Gray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Emily Gray is an excellent narrator, and I'm disappointed that she doesn't narrate the rest of the series. Her subtle voice inflections and changes for each character are superb. Many British narrators overdo it when doing an American accent, but Emily Gray gets it just right. I'll be looking for other books that she has narrated.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Get ready for another crazy adventure with Becky Bloomwood, Shopaholic Extraordinaire!
