Historia
What links conscious experience of pain, joy, color, and smell to bio-electrical activity in the brain? Christof Koch has devoted much of his career to bridging the seemingly unbridgeable gap between the physics of the brain and phenomenal experience. This engaging book - part scientific overview, part memoir, part futurist speculation - describes Koch's search for an empirical explanation for consciousness.

Drivel
Revisado: 06-05-21
If you like the self-obsessed narcissism of most TED talks, you’ll love this. I made it through most of the second chapter before crying uncle! If you are actually interested in consciousness, listen to some of Dan Dennett’s works. Good narration, though.

Fun Stories, Sometimes Too Graphic
Revisado: 01-23-21
My only complaint is the unnecessarily gory descriptions. The stories are formulaic, but still enjoyable and interesting. The characters have character. The reader is very good, mastering multiple voices, with great pronunciation and enunciation.

Historia
The constellation of Hydri, also called the Serpent, became an undesirable destination during the era of humanity's most prolific interstellar colonization. For Hydri was under strict quarantine because it harbored an intelligent and dangerous alien race, the insectoid majat. Yet human colonies predating the quarantine did exist in this sector of space, which they called Serpent's Reach. Cut off from others of their own kind, they had their own inbred culture and special relationships with the alien majat.

Okay Story, So So Narration
Revisado: 12-21-20
Narrator often uses emphasis on incorrect syllables, sometimes making sentences harder to follow. It’s always a little jarring. Other occasional mistakes were made in pronunciation that should have been edited. There was little attempt to distinguish between characters using differing voices, so it was often hard to tell who was speaking.
This universe isn’t as interesting to me as the ones in the Foreigner and Faded Sun series, both of which are great.

One of the Best
Revisado: 12-14-20
This was one of the best sci fi series I’ve read in many years. Interesting story line, focusing on people and cultures rather than battles. Good writing. Fantastic narration. This is up there with Dune in quality.

Pure Adventure, Okay Writing, Great Narrator
Revisado: 10-07-19
The story, in both the first and second books, was one long car chase (equivalent). Good when you can only half-listen to a book. Narrator was better than what he was reading.

Not Sure How I Got This Far in the Series
Revisado: 03-11-19
The obsession with violence and psychopathology seems to have grown, or I just missed it in earlier books. It was tiresome and depressing. Also, getting pretty tired of hearing how the main characters 'smile' in different ways in response to events. The writing has either degraded, or I suddenly woke up and noticed how bad it is.

I Don't Usually Read YA Fiction
Revisado: 03-11-19
This had a pretty decent story line, character building, etc. Not very sophisticated, but I guess it's because I'm an old adult, rather than a young one. It provide pleasant background listening. A nice break from the space opera genre of killing everyone different from you. The young reader is very good.

During a perfect spring evening on Nantucket, a violent storm erupts and a dome of crawling, colored fire blankets the island. When the howling winds subside and the night skies clear, the stars appear to have shifted. The mainland has become a wilderness of unbroken forest, where tools of bronze and stone litter the beaches, and primitive natives scatter in terror.

Sophomoric
Revisado: 02-17-19
Cliches and stereotypes. I made it to chapter 4, and stopped when one of the many one-dimensional characters said “you can’t kill whales”. The reader has nearly the same accent for all characters. The guy from Montana speaks with a Virginia like accent.
