Historia
Sam Carlson is a projectionist in small-town Minnesota, where fantasies unspool in glorious black and white—for him and for his sweetheart, college-bound math whiz Sarah Haber. When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, Sam is sent to the Philippines and captured as a POW. Brutalized but unbroken by the Bataan Death March and POW camps, Sam is one of eighteen hundred starved and weakened prisoners herded into the cargo hold of a barbaric hell ship called the Arisan Maru, his survival doubtful.

Hold Strong
Revisado: 04-04-25
The story is based on fact. Robert Dugoni is an excellent novelist. Putting those two facts together resulted in an excellent book.
The narrator excelled at conveying the emotions appropriately throughout the book.
The Afterward has additional information about characters. There is information from declassified documents. The Afterward was disturbing to hear, but necessary.
If you have an interest in history, I recommend this book from Audible.

This story has good character development. It has twists and turns. A game of chess helps develop the story. Everything I have read by Robert Dugoni has been excellent.

Kirk Herbstreit is a reflection of the sport he loves, a reflection of his football-crazed home state of Ohio, where he was a high school star and Ohio State captain, and a reflection of another Ohio State football captain thirty-two years earlier: his dad Jim, who battled Alzheimer’s disease until his death in 2016.

I enjoy learning about people and their lives. My two favorite college football commentators are Chris Fowler and Kirk. College GameDay is fun with Reese, Coach, and Kirk. I'm a Clemson fan. Because of all those things, I chose Out of the Pocket. It was a perfect book for me.
This is a deeply personal story, well-written and read by Kirk Herbsttreit.
I recommend it if you enjoy college football.

Historia
Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

The Echo of Old Books
Revisado: 08-08-24
Barbara Davis was a new author to me when I chose this book. That turned out to be an excellent choice.
The characters are varied: those to love and those to hate, those to be frustrated with, and those you cheer on.
The three narrators were excellent.
The story is one of the best I have found; I never knew what to expect next.

Historia
Two victims of the infamous Cleveland kidnapper share the story of their abductions, their decade in captivity, and their final, dramatic rescue. On May 6, 2013, Amanda Berry made headlines around the world when she fled a Cleveland area home and called 911, saying: “Help me, I’m Amanda Berry...I’ve been kidnapped, and I’ve been missing for 10 years". A horrifying story rapidly unfolded. Ariel Castro, a local school bus driver, had separately lured Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight to his home, where he kept them chained in the basement.

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

I loved it! The story was interesting; the actors were excellent! Toward the end, as the tale covered many years, I enjoyed the characters' back-and-forth. I found it different than most sped-up endings. This ending was well done.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

From old Jacob to young Jacob and back and forth, the story flows nicely. The two narrators did a fantastic job. Their talent was evident in their vocal differentiation between characters. The emotions rendered were appropriate to each situation.

Historia
Meet Ellie Cooke. When it comes to all things environmental she’s, well, a bit "green". It’s not that she doesn’t care about things like climate change and plastic pollution, it’s just that life has always got in the way of that sort of thing. But when the PR firm Ellie works for is taken over by keen environmentalist Nolan Reece, it’s clear that if she wants to save her job, she’s going to have to get serious about being green—or face being recycled.

The Best Narration
Revisado: 06-09-24
The narrator for this story is probably the best I've ever heard! She was amazing. The story is good, unless you are offended by an overuse of the F-bomb. This was not my first Nick Spaulding book, but the use of the F-bomb was probably double what I was expecting. Ellie is a problem waiting to happen.
