Historia
January '42. L.A. reels behind the shock of Pearl Harbor. Local Japanese residents are rounded up and slammed behind bars. Massive thunderstorms hit the city. A body is unearthed in Griffith Park. The cops tag it a routine dead-man job. They're wrong. It's an early-warning signal of chaos. There's a murderous fire and a gold heist. There's Fifth Column treason on American soil. There are homegrown Nazis, Commies, and race racketeers. It's populism ascendant. There's two dead cops in a dive off the jazz-club strip. And three men and one woman have a hot date with history.

Somewhat disappointed
Revisado: 09-09-19
I’m a big Ellroy fan, and have loved the Undwrworld and LA trilogies. I thoroughly enjoyed Perfidia and had high hopes for This Storm. This story picks up where Perfidia left off, and it took me some time to get reacquainted with the characters. Unlike previous reads, I could never really engage with this one. I’m reminded of a scene from the movie “Amadeus” where the Austrian king tells Mozart he liked the opera, it just had....too many notes. This book had too many words.

Historia
In Killing Commendatore, a 30-something portrait painter in Tokyo is abandoned by his wife and finds himself holed up in the mountain home of a famous artist, Tomohiko Amada. When he discovers a previously unseen painting in the attic, he unintentionally opens a circle of mysterious circumstances. To close it, he must complete a journey that involves a mysterious ringing bell, a two-foot-high physical manifestation of an Idea, a dapper businessman who lives across the valley, a precocious 13-year-old girl, a Nazi assassination attempt during World War II in Vienna.

Uneventful
Revisado: 03-18-19
My previous Murakami reads have been 1Q84 and Wind Up Bird Chronicle. I fully enjoyed both of the books and had high expectations for Killing Commendatore. I was left disappointed by this book. I’m not the most intellectual reader, and Murakami’s work sometime is over my head, but I definitely enjoyed those previous works. I was unable to
Engage with this book. I never get that anticipation or excitement about what was coming next. In a word...boring. Perhaps it was the translation from Japanese that left the prose stilted, like the characters were speaking unnaturally. The narrator did not help the situation. His voice was bland and did not bring the words to life. The book and ideas here are quality, and Murakami fans should read this book. I, however, was disappointed.

Have never read Dan Simmons. I really enjoyed listening to this book. I found myself connected to the characters and settings for this historical novel. Tom Sellwood is an OUTSTANDING narrator. Highly recommend this book

Wasson delivers another gem
Revisado: 10-22-17
I really love James Elroy books. Within that grouping, this is not my favorite but nonetheless very entertaining. Craig Wasson is an absolute master and he delivers a great performance here. His interpretation of Dudley Smith brings him to life. For Elroy and Wasson fans, I would recommend this book.

Historia
With Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami gives us a novel every bit as ambitious and expansive as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which has been acclaimed both here and around the world for its uncommon ambition and achievement, and whose still-growing popularity suggests that it will be read and admired for decades to come.

Another solid Murakami tale
Revisado: 09-15-16
If you could sum up Kafka on the Shore in three words, what would they be?
Surreal, Metaphorical, Beautifully written
What was one of the most memorable moments of Kafka on the Shore?
Johnnie Walker, the cat killer, was my most memorable moment. The detail in the writing gives a horribly wonderful graphic account of a confusing and disturbing scene.
What does Sean Barrett and Oliver Le Sueur bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
They are both wonderful narrators. They bring a clarity to the words and a shape and texture to the story that I could never get by reading it myself. Their narration was absolutely critical to my enjoyment of the book.
If you could rename Kafka on the Shore, what would you call it?
A Man who Talks to Cats
Any additional comments?
As has been my experience with other Murakami books, much of the symbolism and motif's were hard for me to grasp, which leaves me with many questions once the book is finished. As usual with Murakami, the reader doesn't necessarily get a tangible closure.

Apocalypse?
Revisado: 08-22-16
I enjoy a good end of the world story as much as anyone, but The Tribe just didn't do it for me. Brad Manuel was just not able to capture the suspense and danger in this novel. Too many convenient coincidences and no real antagonist made this book too soft for me. I finished it and it was good, just not great. Scott Brick does a good job of narration, similar in style to The Passage series.

Chris Gethard has often found himself in awkward situations most people, including you, probably would have safely avoided. The good news is now, thanks to this book, you can enjoy the painfully funny consequences of his unfortunate decisions at a safe distance. A Bad Idea I'm About to Do invites listeners to join Chris as he navigates an adolescence and adulthood mired in hilariously ill-fated nerdom, and to take comfort in the fact that - as his experiences often prove - things could always be much, much worse.

Not as funny as I though
Revisado: 04-15-16
I picked this book after listening to several 30+ hour novels in a row. I wanted something light and funny...I picked this book based on a few reviews that said it was laugh out loud funny. I did not laugh out loud. I chuckled a few times and found some of the stories amusing, but I didn't find this book funny enough to give it more than 3 stars.
