Historia
As sole heir to the Bredahl Cookies and Cakes fortune, Casper led a comfortable, happy-go-lucky life. Some would say, a charmed life. Sure, there were challenges: relentless pressure to join the family business, and his unrequited feelings for former high school crush Raleigh Jackson. But yeah, a charmed existence, compared to life after being arrested for murder and spending nearly a year in Chippewa Falls County Jail, awaiting trial.

What a fantastic listen. Kept me engaged from beginning to end! Really enjoy the complex hate-love dynamic. If you are a fan of Josh Lanyon's works or never read any of her book before, then this is a must.

A little different but enjoyable
Revisado: 09-07-24
I felt like there wasn't much of a mystery in this book. Unlike the rest of the series in which our protagonist snoop around and solve mysteries, the mystery kind of mostly confessed itself here. However, I still enjoyed it.

I enjoy this book thoroughly. Captivated from start to finish. I don't know how Josh does it. The balance between mystery and romance was perfect. The narrator also did a fantastic job.

A disappointment
Revisado: 02-16-23
This was a disappointment as I thoroughly enjoyed "A Place Called Winter". I didn't realize when starting that this was a fictional retelling of the life of the real poet Charles Causley. The story is told from Charles and his mother's perspective. It felt clinical and detached. I kept on waiting for something to happen but nothing really did. I felt obligated to push myself to finish and was left utterly unsatisfied and simply disappointed. At some point, I get a sense that the author seems to be sympathetic to the Nazi germans and Imperial Japanese through both Laura and Charles's POV which left me rather uncomfortable. As someone who is interested in WWII history and atrocities committed against innocent civilians by the Imperial Japanese, especially being someone with ancestors who suffered under such cruelty, it was slightly upsetting.
Unfortunately, I don't think I will be picking up another book by Mr. Gale, at least for some time.

Did not enjoyed the 2nd book as much
Revisado: 10-22-22
I quite enjoyed the first book of this series. However, the second book left me a bit unsure and I don't think I will continue the series. There isn't much character development for the two main protagonists. We got more backstory and character developments on side characters than we do on our main MCs. There are things done in the second book that made no sense to me. But there was one scene in book 2 that really bother me. SPOILER ALERT: In the second book, the two MCs are helping a village defeat a magical creature that had been terrorizing and killing the village. At one point, one of the two MCs went into the elven tower to retrieve part of a sword needed to kill the creature (which turns out to be unnecessary because it was killed by only half of the sword) as well as saving the captured princess. Came with him was a wizard. Anyways, the creature flew off down to the village where the other MC is. Instead of returning to help out his companion, he pretty much left his companion to face the creature alone and potentially die after the wizard pretty much told him "oh he is probably dead anyways". This was the companion he supposedly always has his back. At this point, all of the characters start to feel like devices to move the plot along instead of fully fleshed-out characters which makes me don't care to follow their story.
I did enjoy the narration and all of the voice actings with sound effects/music. I think if I have read the book, I would have never finished the second one.
