Historia
There is a world. One of endless night, surrounded by an even deeper darkness. Filled with nightmares come to life, twisted shapes that slink to windows and ease open doors, sliding across floors to look down on helpless faces. There is another world. A bright world, so bright it burns. Filled with stacked stones that call forth miracles, raised by callused hands that tremble in their work, drained with each stone lifted, settled, lifted again.

Sanderson doesn't disappoint.
Revisado: 09-14-24
excellent book, only complaint is with the narration. I usually don't mind. Michael Kramer or Kate Redding, however, on this one it seemed like Kate was trying too hard or something for the first few chapters, It felt like she was reading to a group of preschoolers, with lots of over exaggeration. IDK, maybe I was just having a grumpy day.

From the ashes of a devastated Boston, a harrowing legend emerges. Thirteen years prior, the colossal kaiju, Nemesis, ravaged the city in her relentless pursuit of retribution. Today, mankind's survival teeters on the sacrificial offerings atop a chilling monolith known as The Altar, where the condemned pay the ultimate price to prevent Nemesis's wrath from consuming humanity.

Trust me, you will like this novel whether you're a fan of kaiju or not. Robinson's books are fun, regardless of genre or plot, so don't hesitate to give this a listen. Of course, listening to RC Bray is a pleasure in and of itself.

LOL didn't get past the first chapter.
Revisado: 09-21-22
Apparently this is a book that is trying to get folks who are unaquianted with sailing into sail boats and out on the water. I don't think the author will succeed in that goal with this audio book. I myself love to sail and I love sailing culture and I love sailboats, but if I were just thinking about getting into it, this audio book might very well dissuade me. in the very first chapter (not including the read aloud table of contents) the author launches into a jargon laden, technical discourse that quickly digresses into a babble of blatherskite. Even our brave narrator becomes bogged down in the quagmire of tricky and sticky words, after stubbornly pressing on and on through the syllables, not knowing what she's saying or quite how to say it. I imagined her pausing the audio recording grabbing the book and throwing it against the wall. I started laughing so hard at how ridiculous it all was I had to pull my car over until I could regain control of myself. I decided to end my misery there and I just shut it off. Perhaps there is something valuable or worth listening to in the later chapters, but I guess I won't ever know.

Historia
Home from Distant Seas completes the trilogy of books by James Baldwin recounting his 25 years of live-aboard cruising adventures. The author creates a tribute to the sea and to those who venture upon her in small voyaging sailboats as he describes his personal journey of survival and discovery at sea as well as the sailors and local people he met along the way. Continuing here with the memoir of his second adventurous circumnavigation begun in his earlier books Bound for Distant Seas and The Next Distant Sea.

A plea to Audible
Revisado: 09-14-22
Dear Audible, please, for love all things nautical, do NOT let Ross Pipkin narrate any more non fiction sailing books. I believe his... talents are best suited to children's adventure fiction or some such.
That off my chest, Baldwin's book series are a must read (listen) for any and all who love or dream of sailing. I cannot recommend these "distant seas" books highly enough.

Historia
At middle age, Herb and Nancy Payson decided they needed a change. Why not give up life on shore, quit their jobs in the smoky nightclubs of Los Angeles, and take up the cruising life? In Sea Foam, their 36-foot ketch, the Paysons and their large brood of teenage children cruised the Pacific for six and a half years. They experienced a certain amount of stark terror, but their delights far outbalanced the drawbacks. This special 35th anniversary edition is enhanced with a foreword by Lin Pardey, plus Herb's reflections on how cruising affected his children and his relationship with his determined, lifelong partner/wife Nancy.

bad narrator
Revisado: 08-23-22
A good book, but the second worst narrator I've ever heard on audible. Mispronounced words, awkward pauses, wildly ranging volumes, listening to this guy is like enduring a middle school class reading aloud from a textbook. Too bad cuz the book itself is quite nice.

Historia
Put Jonathan Raban on a boat and the results will be fascinating, and never more so than when he’s sailing around the serpentine, two-thousand-mile coast of his native England. In this acutely perceived and beautifully written book, the bestselling author of Bad Land turns that voyage—which coincided with the Falklands war of 1982—into an occasion for meditations on his country, his childhood, and the elusive notion of home.

Historia
Recently widowed, Winnie, 84, was in need of some companionship. Someone to help with the weekly food shop and offer tips on the crossword. Ben, 34, was looking for a new housemate. As the UK was locked down in 2020, Ben and Winnie's lives interwove, forming an unlikely friendship, where lessons were learnt (heat the red wine in the oven with the plates, preserve or pickle whatever you can, never throw anything away) and grief, both personal and that of a nation, was explored.

Perhaps not a "feel-good" book, but I'd say it's a
"feel-real" one (if you'll allow) and I appreciate that. Bitterness and sweetness blended handsomely. Down to earth, but gently.

Historia
When Ben Aitken learnt that his gran had enjoyed a four-night holiday including four three-course dinners, four cooked breakfasts, four games of bingo, a pair of excursions, 16 pints of lager and luxury return coach travel, all for a hundred pounds, he thought, that's the life, and signed himself up. Six times over. Good value aside, what Ben was really after was the company of his elders - those with more chapters under their belt, with the wisdom granted by experience, the candour gifted by time, and the hard-earned ability to live each day like it's nearly their last.

Historia
Not many Brits move to Poland to work in a fish and chip shop. Fewer still come back wanting to be a Member of the European Parliament. In 2016, Ben Aitken moved to Poland while he still could. It wasn’t love that took him but curiosity: he wanted to know what the Poles in the UK had left behind. He flew to a place he’d never heard of and then accepted a job in a chip shop on the minimum wage. When he wasn’t peeling potatoes he was on the road scratching the country’s surface.

Historia
In 2013, travel writer Ben Aitken decided to follow in the footsteps of his hero - literally - and started a journey around the UK, tracing the trip taken by Bill Bryon in his classic tribute to the British Isles, Notes from a Small Island. Staying at the same hotels, ordering the same food, and even spending the same amount of time in the bath, Aitken's homage - updated and with a new preface for 2022 - is filled with wit, insight and humour.
