A must read! This book details the frightening level of influence on policy by a select & surprisingly few individuals. It details how these individuals not only shaped policy but have even influenced, to a large degree, how many/most Americans see our country. And the authors bring receipts. At 60 years old, I had considered myself politically astute. After listening to this book, I realize I’ve been naive & blind to how our country works. And, let me qualify that by saying, in the past, I have worked on the fringes of corporate advocacy so I, more than the average person, have “been in the room” (albeit, VERY low level). This is one of those books that opens your eyes & changes how you see the world. But, like Socrates’ “Allegory of the Cave”, be careful what you wish for. It’s often painful to stare directly into the light.

I really hope we see more Hayley Chill in the near future. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite series!

When I read the description, I worried this would be a knock off of Hunger Games. Perhaps the pretense is similar but then, the pretense for Hunger Games is similar to Lord of the Flies.

No, this story stands on its own merit. And I really love the concept of doling out the story in fragments through interviews/first hand accounts.

The performances by the narrators were terrific. It added to the already compelling story.

Excellent listen!

I’m going to get Performance out of the way first. The great thing about Scott Brick is that, despite (or maybe because of?) his unique style. I always forget that the story is being narrated. That’s the highest complement I can pay him.

Now, to this installment of this beloved franchise. Don Bentley does the *nearly* impossible by honoring the Jack Ryan/Jack Ryan Jr series while putting his own wonderful stamp on it. The breakneck pace makes your heart pound and the dialogue flows naturally.

Bentley is personally responsible for me increasing my carbon footprint. Listening in my car, I’d often find myself circling the block because I needed to find out what happened next.

I can’t wait for the next installment!

If you’ve heard Honig on CNN, or read anything he’s written on the subject of Barr, you won’t be surprised that he’s not a fan. What becomes immediately apparent in Hatchet Man, is that Elie Honig’s ire is not based on partisanship but rather his reverence for our Justice system and his anger at how Barr has flaunted long held conventions.

I prepared myself to wade through lots of legalize and nuance because I lack any legal background. I was pleasantly surprised that Honig very seldom drifted into institutional jargon and, when he did, he was adept at explaining it on a layman’s level & with examples.

I’m hopeful history will treat Barr with the appropriate level of scorn but I think Hatchet Man will become an important record of how William Barr enabled one of the most dangerous men in our country’s history. Even more so because Elie Honig, as the voice of experience, does an incredible job of explaining WHY Barr acted as he did.

Barr wasn’t just a groveling sycophant. Honig makes a very credible case that Barr had his own agenda. And it is a frightening one.

This book will be one of perhaps hundreds that will be written about the Trump era. I think it will end up being one of the most important.

Tim Wendal is a fantastic writer. But, to be clear, the writing enhances the story. It never gets in the way. It’s never pretentious. It makes you feel like you’re there. I listened in my car and-I’m not proud of this-drove around the block, on several occasions, because I had to know what happened next. Read/listen to this book. You will not be sorry!

If you’re a Grisham fan, you know what you’re in for; a fun story, some good guys, some bad guys and some surprises about who is who. Along the way, you want to shout at some of the characters for their self-destructive behavior. But mostly, you’re a voyeur, enjoying somebody else’s adventure.

There are lots more “literary” writers out there and, occasionally, one of them can even tell a story as fun as one of Grisham’s. And, even Grisham can’t be Grisham every time but, this time, I bought a Grisham story and I got more than my money’s worth.

January LaVoy did a wonderful job with both women and men characters.

The story is compelling and the writing is nothing short of beautiful. Delia Owens has created a masterpiece. This, from a guy who loves thrillers, especially spy novels.

And the narration is extraordinary. When I listen to a novel, I always worry that I’ll be distracted by the narrator. If I don’t notice the narration, I consider it a great job.

It’s hard to believe Cassandra Campbell was the only narrator. Not that her actual voice took on extraordinary range but because, through nuanced use of accent and cadence, she makes you believe your hearing the character’s voice. Whether it is a girl, woman, boy or man, I bought every one of her characters. I’ve never heard anything like it!

Read this book, if you must, but for the full experience, consider listening to this one
