Over the course of four celebrated works of fiction and almost forty years, Richard Ford has crafted an ambitious, incisive, and singular view of American life as lived. Unconstrained, astute, provocative, often laugh-out-loud funny, Frank Bascombe is once more our guide to the great American midway.

I did enjoy it as I thought it was well written and performed well. The story is a sad one without being maudlin.

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Not Tana’s best
Revisado: 10-21-20
This book is ok, but no where near as good as the Dublin police procedural. Too much talk among the locals at the bar. So I must have spaced when Cal figured out that his neighbor was involved. Hope this is not the first in a series about Cal

I hated this book - I sure am in the minority
Revisado: 09-14-15
What disappointed you about Thornwood House?
I thought the writing was terrible. Too many emerald eyes and much too much emphasis on the plants and birds. The writing was full of mindless cliches.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Spider's Nest Book
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was ok.
What character would you cut from Thornwood House?
ALL
Any additional comments?
When the book was coming to an end, there was moonlight - then there was lightning - then there was rain. More moonlight. Never any explanation of how the characters could see what they were doing when the rain was falling and the lightning subsided. They were in the middle of a dense woods. No way the events could have unfolded in total darkness.

I hated the performance and the story
Revisado: 04-25-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The performer was annoying. His voice inflection was distracting. I did want to finish the story as there was suspense. But in the end, I found it contrived and quite ridiculous. I see from other reviews that I am in the minority.Someone compared it to Tell No One by Coben, which I thought was great. (I read it with my eyes.)
Would you ever listen to anything by Harlan Coben again?
NO
How could the performance have been better?
Different narrator
Any additional comments?
A good editor might have directed Mr. Coben to Guidestar where he could have gotten the Form 990 for "Fresh Start" for free.

Rabbit from Start to Finish
Revisado: 09-05-09
I spent the summer listening to all four Rabbit books (having read the first two when they first were published years ago). They are wonderful books and in a small way historical novels in that they make reference to real events. Updike has invented characters who do annoying and stupid (and sometimes awful) things, but who are not annoying to read about. I found myself very absorbed with the characters. My husband has been listening too and we find ourselves talking about what has happened to Rabbit and Janice (sort of like contemporary discussions about 24 at the water cooler in the office).
I don't know if the books would appeal to younger people. As a person who is about 10 years younger than Rabbit, I found it fun and interesting to follow his life.
I think Mr. Morey's reading is wonderful. He has created subtle voices for the characters and his reading brings the stories to life in a way that reading would not. Highly recommended.

Not much good to say
Revisado: 02-15-09
This is a pretty silly story. I did sort of like listening to the descriptions of the cold during the ice cold weather outside my car while I was listening. But too many preposterous things occurred to make it worth spending time on it.
