Distracted writing
Revisado: 12-29-24
This story is not longer an epic or a story. It’s an ADHD explosion of world-building that, after book 2, has become obsessively contrived. World-building is excellent, but not when it boggles down the real story. This is a bible of information with maybe 20 hours of authentic storytelling, perhaps only 10 of that being progression to what I will safely assume is why most people by this book.
(If you are reading this comment and say “ no I love this world building” then stop yourself, you aren’t who I’m referring too as a general audience.)
Besides my final verdict, which will come after this last remark, I must point out how cringe-inducing and painful it was to listen to forced scenes of painful dialogue, like an evil god having a “debate” with a queen in exile over why an allied nation should switch teams.
FV: Bless you for creating wondering characters, an engaging, captivating narrative, and a new world to find creativity. Still, your method for world-building brings in mid vibes but most importantly is non-immersive, barely makes this novel worth the time. 62 hours is how you kill your “epic,” when only a 3rd of it is relevant to the story and world at hand.
Solid 6.5 out of 10.

Historia
As far from explored space as any human has ever been, Geary and the Alliance fleet are on their own, protecting a diplomatic mission in territory belonging to an alien species with still-unknown motives. His already complex and dangerous mission is further imperiled by deadly challenges from other human factions seeking to harm or exploit the aliens. When another alien species whose technology is far more advanced than humanity’s arrives, the stakes are raised to the highest possible level.

This book is space opera for children
Revisado: 11-01-24
As a devoted follower of Jack Cambell, at this point, I can no longer say these novels are anything good beyond being satisfying to the Black Jack itch. I feel like, whether intentional or not, this book is speaking to me like I’m a precious little ignorant baby who hasn’t grasped the significant concepts of this series over the dozen novels to this point. Hearing these people “plan a national force” was a glaring and unapologetically “we are all dumb and must explain what a multi-national force is.” Like…… WTF is the alliance if not a multinational force…. There are some exciting underlying plots that I would love to explore, and I will continue to read these novels because I have committed much time and money this far…. But I confess this series is child fiction compared to the ever-growing and mature sci-fi novels/military sci-fi novels with more fleshed out, less overly explained “exposition.”
John, you are an incredibly talented story creator, but you aren’t doing anything new after a decade, and I encourage you to let your characters mature…. They are in the military and at the end of a 100-year war…. This feels more like a child-friendly novel you give to middle school kids about the Roman Empire because you don’t want to scare people with what they did in detail.
I feel a lot of meh after these novels but I am, at the very least, very happy and grateful to you for continue Black Jacks story.

Surprisingly good! Good pick up story!
Revisado: 06-02-24
I sometimes find myself in a dead gap of nothing to do when I tackle multiple book series and get to a point where I don’t want to start a new one even though there are no new books in my dozens of series for months. I got this as it leans into something I have been brainstorming myself. Surprisingly, fantastic, well-rounded characters, and though I could easily predict who certain people were, a few minor breadcrumbs of “something more going on” have captivated me. My internal detective wants more, and thankfully, this story is well-written with likable, lovable, respectable characters. There are some I don’t even like, but they are meant to be disliked based on how they are written. Well done. Now GIVE ME MORE!!!!

Historia
The Troubles. A quaint name for a horrific period in the galaxy's history. A period whose atrocities were superseded only by the terror of the Savage Wars that had come before. Almost no corner of the galaxy was spared a taste of terrible war, cutthroat intrigue…and remorseless death. In the aftermath, this battered galaxy now longs for peace and stability. The Republic, now reformed, seeks to govern by the rule of law. But no matter how sincere the reform, how earnest and well-meaning the ruler, some worlds refuse to place their destiny in the hands of others. Ever again.

Where HAS RC BRAY GONE :(
Revisado: 05-18-24
Not a bad book but not a great season opener. I will say the change in narrator is foreshadowing to the rest this season… wildly “meh.” This novel is not going to be a fun game-changer and seems to say to “welcome to a 3 out of 5 stars; 3rd season” without Bray. I would not have minded the new narrator if this book had taken us somewhere forward with the storyline. Still, these guys are running high off their success and squeezing another lackluster novel like that book where the legion invaded a planet, a side quest plot. I'm not a total fan, but I assure anyone buying the book that it’s not bad. I, however, had to refund this one. I’m chose to stop supporting side quest novels, or I would be buying more of the spin-offs.
Main GE novels should take us forward in time, even if it’s just a little.

This is an interesting break from what I am use too out of these novels & I will confess it is the trend of these books types across the whole genre. So I am all for it! Keep up the good writing, character development and hurry up with the next novel so I can burn through it like I did this one.

Opposites attack! When the Magelord Minalan the Spellmonger’s two apprentices, Tyndal and Rondal, were knighted after the battle of Timberwatch, they were dubbed Knights Magi: A new class of nobility for distinguished High Magi. Designed to combine the pursuit of arcane knowledge with the noble aspirations of chivalry, it elevated them above common warmage...in theory. The problem was they had no idea how to be a Knight Mage...because no one had ever been one before.

Historia
Minalan gets medieval! When you defeat the invading goblin army, get knighted on the field of battle, gifted with lands and gold, usually your happily-ever-after is...happy. But now that Minalan the Spellmonger has been ennobled and enfiefed, Sire Minalan has a task cut out for him that makes defeating goblins seem like child’s play: Moving his very pregnant bride and a few thousand refugees from Boval Vale into the remote, sparsely peopled Domain of Sevendor. But when he arrives, he finds the land withered from neglect, filled with superstition and suspicion.

I am curious about how much storyboarding he did before making this amazingly well-assembled story. I love the character development, plot structure, and overall mood and progress. The one thing I’m not sold on is how sometimes I can hear when the author is intentionally forcing the main character a little extra on his thoughtlessness to avoid plot devices he’s going to bring up later. I smell your lies, Terry. I hear them, but because you create such fun characters. I forgive you and also silently shake my fist at you for such little moment of “move the story along.” 🫶🏼👌🏼

Alright, if you have been sticking with the series this long then you know the rules. We Bully the heck out of Gregg Hurwitz until he writes and publishes the next novel. THEN we politely and humble BEG Scott Brick to hurry along the narrator. We can’t stress him out because we need to keep his voice ready.
Thanks! Hurry. Up! 🫶🏼
