as usual, Zara and Jodi were superlative! Best author & narrator partnership in the audiobook universe

I tried pacing my listening so I could enjoy it over a longer period of time but that didn’t happen. And now I have to wait a whole bloody year for the next one. I did think, though, that Jodi was a tad cruel to Grint and Lachlan.

got totally lost! A degree in microbiology or genetics might be a tad useful in understanding the book’s contents.

I liked Lucy Rayner’s narration - her range of male & female voices & accents is fantastic and was the only thing that kept me listening for as long as I did. I got totally lost, however, in the scientific terms, theories, & jargon for microbiology, genetics etc. The detailed descriptions & explanations were overwhelming. At one point I nearly phoned my niece who has a doctorate in microbiology for help. The thriller elements of the story did manage to be quite exciting but then would be drowned in the aforementioned scientific details. In the end I gave up.

Great story, not so great narration

I was really pleased that Elliot Kay had written another in this terrific series - I’ve enjoyed all of them and this a great addition. As it’s been six years since the last book, I listened to the 5th of the series again to remind me of what had happened. Both were read by Tim Chabon but for some strange reason, the non-character narrative in the 6th book was read by Tim in a whisper which was a tad annoying - I sometimes had to strain to hear/understand what was said because of the sibilance it created. I’m hoping that a 7th book will be out soon, read by Tim, but without the whispering.

superb combination of story & narration

I loved all of it - the development of Marius and Rake’s as individuals and their relationship was beautifully done and within a good murder mystery melding earth & fairy. Nicholas Bolton was a wonderful narrator as well.

awful narration

I love this series but the switch from Finty, who narrated the first 3 books beautifully, to Fiona who didn’t, was jarring to say the least and very disappointing. The male voices in particular were dreadful - flat, robotic, cold and having little difference in tone between each one. Wyn also sounded like a prig. I can’t listen to it anymore and will read a hard copy instead. Please, please re-record this with Finty Williams.

PS at the suggestion of another reviewer, I slowed the narration speed to .95 and that made it slightly better. Still not good enough and I still want the book re-recorded with Finty!!

A terrific story with a superb narrator

Enjoyed this so much - excellent story with an interesting range of characters. Flinty Williams was a superb narrator - I haven’t heard her narrate before so will definitely look for her again. Her range of voices was amazing - she made the male voices believable giving the fae ones a lyrical depth. AJ Lancaster is seriously good at world building. So looking forward to hearing the other books in this series.

loved this story, the characters and narration. Like the other books, I had to increase the narration speed to 1.3 to make it listenable. Actually, I have to do it everytime with the books that Natasha reads - I’m not sure why because I’m pretty sure she doesn’t actually read them at the original speed, but are purposefully slowed down post-production.

Really enjoyed this story - well-written characters, & interesting relationships. I love this narrator though for some reason, I have to increase the narration speed for all the books she reads - this one I increased to 1.25.
