Well done
Revisado: 07-11-24
Thanks Glenn for your openness and honesty. As someone who was once a devout leftist who matured into a conservative late in life, I can relate to Glenn. It was at a Occupy rally where I was cornered and threatened with being kldnapplng and vlolence by those I thought I was allies with simply for being a wuhyte man. That was the beginning of the end of my leftism. I slowly woke up to the damage leftism was doing to the world and how blind I was. I realized that while I pointed my finger in hatred at the conservatives it was truly the left who was full of ignorant hate - truly I never even understood nor care to understand their viewpoint.
i hope many more wake up. Maybe it is too late.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

This book challenged me profoundly while bringing tears of joy. Transcendent and inspiring. At times, an out of body experience.

Historia
Moscow, Christmas Eve, 1949. The Soviet secret police intercept a call made to the American embassy by a Russian diplomat who promises to deliver secrets about the nascent Soviet Atomic Bomb program. On that same day, a brilliant mathematician is locked away inside a Moscow prison that houses the country's brightest minds. He and his fellow prisoners are charged with using their abilities to sleuth out the caller's identity, and they must choose whether to aid Joseph Stalin's repressive state - or refuse and accept transfer to the Siberian Gulag camps, and almost certain death.

Incredible story
Revisado: 03-08-23
All Westerners would benefit greatly from this book as we are seeing similar ideologjes become popular with our institutions. As the saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Few topics can more clearly illustrate this expression than this topic.

Historia
Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West but worldwide.

Informative and funny.
Revisado: 08-31-20
I don't agree with SP's reductive view of the positive impact of Judeo Christian values on humanity and find it funny he doesn't see that he has his own kind of religion in the form of a philosophy that is actually derived from some of the core virtues of Judeo Christian philosophy. You could never have had enlightment without Judeo Christian philosophy. All that aside, I enjoyed the book a lot and found it to be insightful. I do think he over-played the 'orange man bad' angle considering DT did not turn out to be the existential threat people made him out to be, but you can't blame him for getting swept up in the anti-Trump fervor - afterall, SP is only human.
