I’m really enjoying Delta James’ new shifter world. We’ve gone from Alaska to Texas. We’ve had Europe, East coast, Midwest. I wonder what’s next?!

Shifting gears in my mind

I’m always delighted when Delta James starts a new series. The only drawback for me is that I have to learn the way the world is built in a new series which is oh so close to other series by the same author, also with shifters. All this means is that I look forward even more to the next ones and indeed the epilogue to this book already has me anxiously awaiting the next book. If there is anything that disappointed me it was the fact that we were introduced to so few characters in this pack so I don’t yet have a strong sense of what kind of people they are as a group. More, please.

Great start to a new series

I’m always up for a new series by an author I like and this is no exception. I think that what struck me most was the way that Gavin completely accepts Roxie’s strength and ability to participate in resolving the problem. If there is a weakness I’d say it was in the fact that the title leads you to expect a “cowboy romance” but, at least at this point in the series, the fact that Gavin’s security team is housed at his ranch is almost incidental. This is a short novel, so the resolution of the plot is quicker and neater than what it might be, but now I’m eagerly waiting to see what direction this series will take. More, please, Ms. James. Lots more!

Narrator skill makes a good story even better.

I’d read this book before, and really enjoyed it, but listening to it with the dual narration just made it so much better. The best thing, to my mind, was the way the two voices were integrated seamlessly into each chapter. Often a dual narration is done so that the male voice (for example) reads all of that character’s point-of-view chapters, and the female reader (for example) does the same. This often results in the same character being read with two different voices, depending on which chapter the speech is in - the male reader must read the female character’s speeches, and the female reader must read the male character’s speeches. This can be disconcerting and jarring. In this performance, the narration was in the voice of the character whose point-of-view the story was in, but ALL the speeches were read, as appropriate, by the male or the female reader. The result was that this was more of a radio drama than just plain old “reading out loud” and I, for one, would love to listen to more by this author and this reading duo. The characters - wonderful, panty-melting, and “how did the author know so much about me”. Highly, highly recommended. More, please.

Great set of books but they’re out of order

These books must be read in order, so it was disconcerting to realise that the book I had just listened to, marked as book 6, was in fact book 7 and kind of a grand finale for the whole series, and thus contained major spoilers.

So to summarise: the book labelled as book 5, “Making Rules”, is actually book 6, The book labelled book 6, “Rules to Ignore”, is actually book 7. The book labelled as book 7, “Rules to Obey”, is actually book 5.

Otherwise, it’s a wonderful and affirming series, beautifully and sensitively read. As long as you know what order to listen to the books in it’s a fabulous thing to own, one which I plan to listen to many times..

Good, well crafted story

Great story, and a fun read that makes me want to read more in this series. The reader has a wide variety of voices used to great effect though I was increasingly annoyed by the heavy Irish accent of the detective, he of the Scottish name and “faint Scottish accent”. Clearly the reader just used the voice she has for the Irish character in the other main series she narrates. (Dannika Dark’s Crossbreed series). That said, she really has a remarkable voice range.

So glad to see a new offshoot in the Kate Daniels world. I was a bit disappointed in the narration. The voice for Aurelia/Julie is great, but the narrator has a fairly limited emotional range so “I will kill you” has about the same weight as “you shouldn’t be here”. Little use of accent or change in quality or timbre. Still, a great story that both answers a lot of “what happened next” questions and asks many more. I’m looking forward to re-listening.

I'm so pleased to read the new Soulwood book! The Soulwood books are quite different from the Jane Yellowrock books - I find them just...more joyful. Love this one, looking forward to more.
