Historia
In a world scarred by an apocalyptic past, evoking a time both 2,000 years past and 2,000 years into the future, untold thousands gather for a crusade. Among them, two men and two women are ensnared by a mysterious traveler, Anasûrimbor Kellhus - part warrior, part philosopher, part sorcerous, charismatic presence - from lands long thought dead. The Darkness That Comes Before is a history of this great holy war, and like all histories, the survivors write its conclusion.

I Loved it!
Revisado: 01-06-25
It's complicated, you're just dropped into the world ... but the work of sorting it all out was worth it! I really enjoyed R Scott Bakker's style.

Historia
Are videogames bad for us? It's the question on everyone's mind, given teenagers' captive attention to videogames and the media's tendency to scapegoat them. It's also - if you ask clinical psychologist Alexander Kriss - the wrong question. In his therapy office, Kriss looks at videogames as a window into the mind. Is his patient Liz really "addicted" to Candy Crush - or is she evading a deeper problem? And when Jack immerses himself in Mass Effect, is he eroding his social skills - or honing them via relationship - building gameplay?

2 Styles in 1 Book
Revisado: 06-25-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am a therapist and a gamer and I felt this book told the story of gaming from the perspective of a therapist and from the perspective of a gamer, which are two drastically different perspectives. I understand some of the negative reviews where people only enjoyed one of those perspectives. However, if you have any interest in therapeutic activities or the therapy process and gaming as well, I think you'll love this book. I also think this is a good resource for parents who don't understand the gaming habits of their children.

Historia
Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

use of amnesia to tell a story full of holes
Revisado: 06-06-22
Similar to Haunting of Hill House and Amityville, but very inferior to both. It's difficult to critique this book and the story within the story without spoilers. It's not plot twists but rather it's misleading the reader. The female character is not a strong-willed independent thinker, she is stubborn and an elitist city dweller who looks down on the small-town folk. The rant about the local hotel not being good enough for her was annoying the first time and didn't get any better the second or third time she made the rant.

Historia
When Pete Etchells was 13, his father died from motor neurone disease. In order to cope, he immersed himself in a virtual world - first as an escape, but later to try to understand what had happened. Etchells is now a researcher into the psychological effects of video games, and was co-author on a recent paper explaining why WHO plans to classify "game addiction" as a danger to public health are based on bad science and (he thinks) are a bad idea. In this, his first book, he journeys through the history and development of video games via scientific study....

it's not what I expected
Revisado: 11-10-21
but it was still good. it's more of a random walk through the author's life and his relationship with video games. The author is also a psychologist and a researcher. I especially enjoyed his chapter on research bias and why we don't have conclusive answers about the connection between violence and violent video games.
