Historia
Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

I picked this book because of the reviews and it being a NY Times bestseller. Less than an hour of listening I wanted to return it but Audible did not allow it (not sure why since I haven’t returned a book in months) so I stuck with it until the end in hopes it would get better. It never did. The premise is completely simplistic and absurd. Everyone in the world gets a box containing a string measuring the length of their life. Some open it and some don’t. The strings are not personalized so when friends decide to switch due to a new military law prohibiting people with short strings to serve, everyone believes them. Really? This book seems amateurish and incomplete. It is not deep or thought provoking. Save your credit.

I liked this book and learned some valuable things about addiction. It was an honest account and very sad. However, the book itself needs better editing. Many times I found myself listening to the same story told a few chapters back. Still, it was worth listening.

What you don’t know can hurt you!
Revisado: 03-29-22
Ignorance is not bliss. This is a must read for every person taking generic drugs (that’s 90% of us). Well researched and thorough, this book exposes the dangers of many generics made in India, China, and other countries minimally regulated by the FDA. Check your generics, if made in these countries, ask your doctor to switch to a better drug. If you can afford the real thing, go for that one! I only wish the author had included a list of reputable companies. That would have been helpful.

A must read
Revisado: 03-11-22
I am someone who has never had to deal with addiction (personal or family) or heavy medication. This book opened my eyes to a terrifying problem in our society. A problem that could have been avoided with incorrupt regulation, honesty, and less greed. It is hard to trust doctors when the majority of their training on prescription drugs comes from the pharma reps who directly benefit from selling the drugs they provide “training” for. Sounds crazy, right? And here we are trusting those doctors to help us feel better. This is a recipe for disaster. The Sackler family made billions and have killed hundreds of thousands of Americans. The “lucky” ones who are able to recover from their addiction live their life with the constant fear of a relapse. Purdue’s opioid drug, OxiContin, (and many similar ones made by other companies) is still widely prescribed. Bottom line, do not take opioid medication, especially long term. Well written, extensively researched book and great narration.

Once Donald Trump’s fiercest surrogate, closest confidant, and staunchest defender, Michael Cohen knows where the skeletons are buried. This is the most devastating business and political horror story of the century. As Trump’s lawyer and “fixer”, Cohen not only witnessed firsthand but was also an active participant in the inner workings of Trump’s business empire, political campaign, and presidential administration.

Revisado: 09-18-20
What a book. If you would like to know the Real Donald Trump, this book is for you. So many things are clear a day now. Cohen was DT wingman for ten years and he’s laying it all out. The lying, cheating, adultery, pettiness, racism, opportunism, narcissism, hate, immorality and even pedophilia. I’m not a fan of Cohen but appreciate his honesty writing this book.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

No his best
Revisado: 05-29-20
Erik Larson is one of my favorite authors and I look forward to his books. He researches his topics thoroughly and is able to write nonfiction flawlessly. That said, I was deeply disappointed with this book. Characters seemed remote and shallow. The story dry and devoid of interesting facts. I just wanted to get through it and move on. Based on diaries of Mary Churchill, Winston Churchill’s daughter, it was hard to connect with her or any memeber of her family. Her dad comes across as weird and not the great figure we are used to read about. It would have been a lot more interesting if the author would have given us a glimpse of a family affected by the bombings. Hope his new subject rises to the level of his previous books. Narration was amazing, though.

Overall ok, with some good solid advice. However, very, very religious. Perfect for parents who are struggling with their children’s decision to leave the church or walk away from religion in general. If you prefer a less religious approach, I recommend I’m Still your Mother by Dr Jane Adams.
