This might be one of my favorite Garth Nix books so far, and I say that having been a fan of the Abhorsen series since I was a kid. Such a charming story featuring signature Nix themes: a young heroine coming of age, thrust into greatness, accompanied by her dog companion, wit, humor and yet another unique twist on magic.

It was a little slow to start, as is the case with most Garth Nix books, as it seems that he likes to spend some time intimately introducing the character, their thoughts, and passion. However, it was overall paced much better than most of his books, which tend to have very rushed endings.

Loved it and would recommend to anyone who is a fan of Nix, magic, and dogs.

I had no idea why the book was taking place 600 years ago and was quite frustrated that Garth Nix had chosen to leave Lirael's storyline to explore a random character. When I realized "the twist" about 3/4th of the way through the book, I actually started crying. I had grown quite attached to Clariel, who was not unlike Sabriel and Lirael, and I felt very sad for her and what the twist meant for her. Garth Nix is such a fantastic author and I'm always amazed at how this story comes together.
