Boring
Revisado: 02-05-25
Hung in there for 15 solid chapters, hoping things would pick up. They didn’t. Skipped ahead to see if anything changed. It didn’t.
The characters are dull. The chapters are dry, nothing jumps off the page to keep you engaged or interested. The narration is fine.
This one didn’t work for me.

Tim and Hawkins
Revisado: 02-05-25
I loved the miniseries and of course, had to read the book.
There are huge differences between the show and the book, but overall the book was good.
My heart breaks for Tim and Hawk because they belonged together.

Historia
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

One of the Greats!
Revisado: 01-20-25
I can’t remember the last time a book made me cry, but this one did.
There are so many layers in this story - a few triumphs, and soul crushing chapters that stick with you. I was fully immersed in the characters and how their story unfolds over time.
The parallels between this book and the real world right now are fascinating and terrifying. The author has created a world that raises awareness and makes you think about the world and our future.

The Male Narrator
Revisado: 01-17-25
Pros: The story isn’t extremely long
Cons: The male character isn’t likable at all. With that being said, the narrator reading his chapters nailed it because his tone is very cocky and dismissive. The pace is very quick and feels very con-man.

Just Okay. Hard To Finish.
Revisado: 01-14-25
Okay, full disclosure - this was suggested based on my social media algorithm. It sounded very promising, but after finishing this novel, I can’t say that I would read this again or recommend to a friend.
Sloane’s story started off pretty good. What I mistook for empowerment became whiny and full of self pity, with both wet things thrown in that fall flat and aren’t fleshed out any further.
Lina’s story has a tragic turn that impacts the trajectory of her life as she settles towards middle age.
Maggie’s story is told from a teenager’s perspective into early adulthood. Her story follows a life event and trial that doesn’t work out the way she was promised.
Given their individual circumstances, I had hoped that there would be a satisfactory outcome or exciting epilogue, but it doesn’t happen. I felt sorry for the characters and hoped they would’ve made better choices.
I will say the author includes heavy subject matter that doesn’t always end on a happy note in real life. She did a great job in including the nuances of such experiences and that can be uncomfortable for the reader. Ultimately, there’s tension in the book without the needed resolution.

Historia
There’s a dress in Daisy’s closet. Silver. Low-backed. Tiny spaghetti straps. She’ll wear it to prom on the arm of Harris Zandari, the most gorgeous senior at her school. How did quiet, barely-there Daisy, land Harris Zandari? She watched him. She watched him so closely, and for so long, that she saw things no one else did. She saw through his charm, his bright, smiling face, to the sad, broken person underneath just waiting for the perfect sad, broken girl to complete him. Daisy was that girl.

The main character is despicable from the very start. This isn’t a villain that you root for or have any sympathy towards.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Extremely Thorough
Revisado: 12-13-24
From beginning to end, this is a fascinating story. This is an in depth read on how Jackie came to be. Who and what shaped her in her formative years and well into adulthood.
Fine writing from the author and narrator, it’s well worth the listen.
