Historia
In the dark, wintry highlands of Lochdubh, Scotland, where the local Calvinist element resists the secular trimmings of Christmas, the spirit of old Saint Nick is about as welcome as a flat tire on a deserted road. Nor is crime taking a holiday, as Constable Hamish Macbeth soon finds himself protecting an unhappy girl, unlocking the secrets of a frightened old woman, and retrieving some stolen holiday goods. Now the lanky lawman must use all his Highland charm and detective skills to make things right.

A lovely story, but…
Revisado: 07-03-23
Enjoyed the story, but feel let down that in neither this story nor the following one; nothing is mentioned of Blair’s perfidious actions from The Death of An Addict. It is difficult to imagine such actions were not called out. At one point in future stories, I hope Beaton decided he had to go. It is becoming too much of a repeat in each book, that Blair is so outlandish in his behaviour towards McBeth, and Strathbane does nothing about it.

Historia
The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.

A book to share with our daughters
Revisado: 04-02-23
I am so glad I bought this. What a gem. It was a well thought out, well told analysis of stories that mention Greek women(Goddesses and human)we thought we'd learned all about through the books or classes that taught us Greek Mythology. Or at least Male Greek Mythology which the Romans retold. A fresh and well documented look at what was really going on with Helen, Medea, Medusa, Pandora and Penelope and others. While scholarly, Haynes has a dry wit that she sprinkles throughout the work. Be prepared to bark out loud with laughter as you listen. I would highly recommend this become the de facto text to accompany all other texts in classes teaching about or introducing students to Greek Mythology and legends.

Historia
On the eve of her marriage to George Hazelton, Frances has a great deal more on her mind than flowers and seating arrangements. The Connors and the Bainbridges, two families of American robber barons, have taken up residence in London, and their bitter rivalry is spilling over into the highest social circles. At the request of her brother, Alonzo, who is quite taken with Miss Madeline Connor, Frances has invited the Connor family to her wedding. Meanwhile, Frances’s mother has invited Mr. Bainbridge, and Frances fears the nuptials may end up being newspaper-worthy for all the wrong reasons.

Back to the time…

Of manners and civility. I enjoyed the travel back to Victorian England. Not the grist and grime of true crime, but a delightful who dunnit. Well read by Ms Zimmerman.

One of the most beguiling of the series
Revisado: 12-19-22
This was a remarkable twisting and turning of the past and present in the Gamache series. It left me thinking about not only the unfair portrayal of women in the past, but also how we each see evil differently, and believe it only when blinded by it.

Loved it but…
Revisado: 09-14-22
As usual Galbraith did not disappoint. While the story line was not the usual suspects; the plot had several-lots of twists, ups and downs. I think however, the book makes a better read than a listen. There is a LOT of text/online messaging of which the reader reads out every.single.word.letter.symbol and number in the character’s digital address. When it is a back and forth exchange between two characters, often quite short…it’s borderline listening to nonsense. Would have been better to only identify the username and leave out the @xxxx.xxx

Lady Philippa, the wife of Sir Aymer, a knight of the realm, disappears while travelling from her husband’s manor to Bampton. She and her maid are traveling in an enclosed wagon, while her husband, his grooms, and a squire are mounted. When the party arrives at Bampton Castle neither the lady nor her maid are within the enclosed wagon: They have simply vanished. Has she been taken or has she fled?

WELCOME BACK STEVEN CROSSLEY!!
Revisado: 09-15-21
When I first began listening to this wonderful series, it was Crossley’s vocal performance that brought the story to life. Then, he was replaced. The next reader was adequate, but did not rise to Crossley’s skill. Thank you Mr. Crossley for returning to grace our imaginations of Starr’s story of mysteries, crimes and miscreants at work, with your superlative performance.
