I was set to be annoyed at listening to grown actors explain how they earned their fame and fortune through hard work and sacrifice, but I needed up being interested and entertained. Ron Howard is apparently the mostly mild-mannered, nice guy we expected to hear about. a bonus: Clint Howard's parallel story as a child and character actor was also very interesting. the events from their lives were quite fulfilling to hear. Listening to both narrate was very enjoyable. Lastly: the book was not too long. Seems like Ron (and Clint) can write a tight novel as well as a movie script.

learning about Genghis Khan's life was the objective, and it was completed in about the 1st 1/3rd of the book. The rest of the story addressed his offspring and world influence
Frankly, that.part of the book is a good cure for insomnia. I was struggling to stay on it to the end. The author also periodically raved about how most of civilization came out of Mongol (Tartar?) rule. It was a bit too much at times.

Still, this is the best you'll get on the biography, so slog through it. Genghis' life is indeed fascinating. I suggest you read up until Genghis dies, put down the book for a year, then read occasionally over the next year after that. You should learn a lot.

I really dislike how "news reports" are now dramatic productions. Stirring music, battle sound effects that emote fear. These are just a few of the media constructions involved in this one-hour story of how drone attacks have progressed over the years since the Wright brothers. Tellingly, the report only addresses the USA's remotely piloted warcraft, omitting the important advances made by Germany in WWII, and Iran's mass production of exploding drones today. This report has some valuable content, but the intent is clearly to make a dramatic case that US drone usage is mis-guided, if not immoral. This assertion is off-center, proven with simply one example: Drone battles by the USA are an attempt to minimize deaths of non-combatants through remotely guided methods. Conversely, the attack on the US by Al- Qaeda on 9-11 attempted to do the opposite: Maximize non-combatant deaths through directly guided methods; i.e., hijacked commercial airliners. I just don't buy the argument that drone technology developments by the US is immoral 9nnligjt of the threat they are addressing.

However, there is a point to make here that was essentially missed by the performers/reporters, yet it supports their case. The main problem with remotely-guided weapons has always been a lack of accurate information in order to carry out the mission. The drone attack organization fills in gaps in their intelligence information by assuming their threat assumption is correct, and accepts any any information that supports that assumption. There is no substitute for a set of human eyes in observation in the theater of operations. THIS flaw is the main conflict in drone technology--the technology is excellent, but the human element needs improvement. Policies on how to use such technology in conflict are either secret or incompletely formed. This story does attempt in a way to address that important issue, but then falls back on simply again stating that suffering in another country means that the technology is bad.

The story of Napoleon Bonaparte is nearly impossible to believe. He was of a minor family from Corsica, evolved to declare himself emperor after several wars along with the French Revolution. in fairness it is difficult to elaborate on all Bonaparte's achievements and translate to English-speaking persons.

unfortunately, the author frequently leaves many key observations in the French language, making it difficult for the English-speaking listeners to understand. Many French phrases are not readily understood by listeners.

Actor is good. be sure to have a map of Europe and north Africa handy, a Bonaparte really gets around in his life with his battles.

First off: the voice actor reading this book, R. C. Bray, is still the best voice actor I've ever listened to, especially when needing to portray numerous characters in the same scene. He expanded his display of talent by taking on a dozen characters or so, each with international accents. Whether they were impure accents or not did not matter, as he used them to distinctly separate the characters in conversation. I listen to him and think of James Doohan, who not only created the unforgettable Scottie character, but voiced distinct characters later for a variety of animated TV shows.

The story was good old space opera, except without any romance. And I mean NONE. The author lays it on a bit thick with the juvenile banter between the main character Joe and the 2md character Skippy. Still, the improbable situations they get into and the McGuffins they invent to get out of danger are entertaining. I guess no second book is as good as the 1st book but this book as still enjoyable for listening to.

The story of finishing the Panama canal highlights national wills (France, then the US), leadership of individuals, then finally, medical, technological and industrial advancement. The downsides of greed, incompetence, and cultural discrimination are also tossed into the mix. But the final outcome was a positive one for the world and all the participants, except maybe Columbia. Even that country had its role to play, showing how too much political intrigue can backfire against your interests.

I suppose the most focused point of this review would be that the author was able to hold the reader's interest by telling the canal story through the presentation of individual leadership and personalities. Being a fan of Theodore Roosevelt was what drew me to this book, but he was only one role in this saga of strong personalities. Learning of the other participants and leaders in the story was a great treat.

The narration was good. The actor was good enough, but there were very long pauses between paragraphs (?) and especially between sections and chapters. I thought at times that my playback had paused.

It helps towards the end of the book if you look up historical photographs of the canal workings on the internet and look at them as you follow along with the narration of the details of the lock and channel construction. This suggestion is probably especially appropriate if you are not technically inclined.

I read this book back when it first came out. It was hard to believe a man such as Peter the Great was a real figure I'm history, given his over-sized impact on Russia, the West, and even his over-sized stature. But is is a really fascinating tale, which is well written by Massie.
my one complaint with this audio book is that the voice actor has a very sophisitcated British accent. He tends to emphasize the ends of sentences with a classic lilt and hold his"n" constants a bit long when quoting characters. I am american, so this observation could just be from one person's limited experience. Still, it took a bit of getting used to. I felt that I was being 'talked down to.' But, he was a very clear and well-paced actor.

Back to the book: Read the Biography of Peter the Great and you will begin to understand why Russia, even with their communist origins, will likely never become a true democracy. Yet, his story is not dull.

I am a Niven fan. Now that audio books are coming out, I can "read" many books I thought I would not get to. this book is the latest. The Dream Park theme is present again, and Griffin is back, which are good.points. The only gripe I have is that the Barsoom part of the story is rather minor. I suspect it was used for the title because "Thimble Winter" was not as commercially recognizable. Still, the actor was good on this reading and the usual murder mystery moderately interesting. I'm going to move on to the next in that Dram Park series.

Intestine premise, even for today

This novel is the first of Niven and Barnes in the context of "Live action role playing" or LARP. LARP is where people play in a manner to Dungeons and Dragons, but as physically-present players in a set for a fantasy game. On top of that context is future technology, with heavy use of holograms and large sets with hired actors, and finally computer-calculated probability of simulated injuries and deaths. All that background alone is fascinating reading. However, the authors add the overlay of a murder mystery on top of it. That part of the plot seemed quite contrived, which was the main weakness of the story.

Nevertheless, having been written on 1981, it still holds well in concept to the year of 2021. None of the technology is outdated or far-fetched, even considering the heavy reliance on impressive holograms. An interesting novel, once you adapt to the rules of "the game."

The writing was good and the voice actor was excellent. But the story ended right after the USA entered the war. seems rather abrupt, but I guess you must end at some point after 100+ chapters.
