I usually listen to audio books on double speed, (so that I can read more books,) but this one I listened to at regular speed because I didn't want it to end.

SF did a fantastic job of compiling a solid narrative from a myriad of classical sources. Couple things I wish he had changed: first, Agamemnon is in my top five list of my most detested literary characters, and I thought that this telling portrayed him as way too... normal. At odds with the brutal, savage things he did. Second, Helen was portrayed as wanting to go home, as longing for Menalaus by the end. I'm pretty sure that this is a Victorian addition to the story, trying to make her more forgivable and conforming to the Victorian ideal of a penitent wife. That doesn't necessarily bother me, it makes sense that she would regret her actions and grow to hate Paris, (who doesn't, ) but there was no mention of her regretting what horrible fate her actions did to the rest of the Trojans, particularly the royal family who had taken her in and protected her for so long. Third, in the appendix, SF calls the works of Homer the first author of written art, and I passionately believe that that honor belongs to Enheduanna, the Sumerian high priestess who lived about a thousand years earlier, is the first named poet in recorded history, and whose poetry to the goddess Inanna is staggeringly beautiful.

It doesn't lose any of its power or its deep catharsis with the repetition. I'll absolutely listen again.

Spoiler alert

First of all, Richard Armitage, amazing as always, no notes.

ok, strap in. Joy Ellis writes really enthralling mysteries that draw you in and make you think, and the characters created in them are well defined and fascinating.
Which makes it all the more infuriating when the main villain dies before the good guys get to them. This has happened in books of hers that I've read before, to the point where I put off listening to this one for so long because I didn't want to get hurt again - The entire time I was listening to this one, I was saying 'don't do it, Joy, DONT YOU DO IT" aloud intermittently, because it is otherwise a captivating mystery that I was really enjoying, and I was so dreading that she would kill of the villain too soon like she does in other books of this series, AND I WAS RIGHT. I threw my phone across the room. Maybe there is something wrong with me, but I want to see (not hear about after the fact,) the bad guys get what is coming to them, I need justice to be cathartic and proportional to how evil they are, I want to know the good guys have something to do with stopping them (they didn't,) and I need to know that the villain KNOWS that they have been defeated. It wouldn't be so irritating if she didn't do this so often, but it just feels like an unsatisfactory letdown of a resolution.
Having said that, this book is still worth reading, and I don't regret having done so, and in all honesty, I'll probably read it again. Because if I'm going to torture myself, it may as well be in Richard Armitage's voice.

Narrator is brilliant, first of all, makes it absolutely worth it.
But one thing I've noticed about this author's stories is that she is a genius at creating complicated and captivating mysteries that leave you desperate to find out what happens next, but the main villain is rarely brought to justice. They usually die before the end of the book and I personally find it rather unsatisfying.

Great book if you're pining over the fact that Jane Austen only published six novels and you've read them 14 times each. This is a whimsical story with intriguing characters, narrated by an appropriately smoldering voice. ;)
