Not so much repetition and stilted dialog in this one, trying to move the story along, like there was in Passions in Death.
Bonded has more action, more of Summerset, better Peabody. Virtually none of Mavis and the rest. But it moved along. This is not so much a review as just a I'm so glad this was better than the last one comment. Also, I always listen to these books at around 1.3 speed because as much as I like Susan Ericksen's narration, she reads too darned slowly. I could listen to these at a faster speed, but I also don't want to rush through them.

Long short stories--stick to his novels

The narrator was all right, but what bothered me was he didn't even take a breath between the ending of one story and giving the title of the next one. It always took me a few seconds to realize he'd started another story.
As for the stories--well, the last one was a repeat from a different collection, so I pretty much skipped through an hour of it.
Generally, the stories were typical of Joe--but his "shorts" don't hold a candle to his regular novels. IMO, the short stories don't have enough meat in them to be as long as they are. In a sense, these actually reminded me of Stephen King's ability to say a lot without going anywhere.

This was supposed to be humorous. The humor must have gotten lost in outer space or wherever. I have very little idea what this book was about because I couldn't half understand it. And the one character--Orville? Oliver?--I'm already blocking the name from my mind--was the most annoying character I've ever had the displeasure of listening to--what a whiney, high pitched, sing-songy, barely comprehensible voice. UGH. I fast-forwarded past it more than once. In fact, I finally skipped several chapters because of the boredom of the stupid adventures---and stupid is different from ridiculous. I certainly won't be buying Book 2.

I wanted to like this. I loved Sarah's first & third books, was a little bored by the second --and this one --Forget "slow burn" in the description. Just slow. Nothing ever seemed to happen. Attraction, crisis, attraction, crisis, blah blah.... I finally skipped about 5 chapters to get to the last two and the epilog. If I had been reading the physical book, I would have been skimming and skipping, too.

I love Joe Lansdale's books, but this one was hard to listen to at times because of the obscenities people can perpetrate on others--and on animals. I actually fast-forwarded over one section because I knew what was coming and I didn't want to hear it. I am appalled by some of the horrors Joe's mind concocts--but in spite of that, the story held me. If you got this book looking for more Hap & Leonard stories, you won't them any here.

Christopher Grant is not my favorite narrator of Joe Lansdale's books. Hap and Leonard sound too much alike in his voice. However, the story itself is wonderful. Hap & Leonard are the best friends ever, and they are realistic. Getting older, feeling the aches and pains of age and past battles. Joe tells a good story that moves at a good pace. All I can say is I discovered Joe not even a year ago and have since read almost all of his books and several of his short stories. Paradise Sky is the book that got me started on Joe, and then I discovered Hap and Leonard. Irresistible.

I absolutely adore Smallhope and Pennyroyal. Characters are wonderful. It moves fast. It's funny. It's tense. It's immensely satisfying. And Zara Ramm is absolute perfection as the narrator.

I heard good things about this title but it was a major disappointment. I had trouble telling the characters apart--they had so little personality. I'm still not sure who the Tigerman was. People get stabbed and shot but bravely stay standing--except for the fellow that got impaled on the predictable broken ship mast. Of course, all the unanswered questions were sort of answered in dialog at the end, but by then, I didn't care, mostly because I still wasn't sure who the characters were. At the end, the author thanked his editor, who really should be in another line of work because this was not exactly the worst written book I've ever forced myself to finish, but it came close.

I have the whole In Death series. The characters drew me in and I was hooked. However, the last 3-4 books have been--not exactly disappointing, but certainly irritating and boring. Robb has different characters repeating the same information over and over and over again, especially at the beginning--like I'm going to forget the victim brought a bag and left it in a room. Good grief. Just beat me over the head with the bag and get it over with. That, plus the repetition is often couched in stilted dialog. This book could have been a novella. I keep hoping Nora will get the spark back into JD's stories, which is why I keep coming back for more. I just hate giving up on characters I've grown to love.

It's not that JD Jackson is a bad reader--he just doesn't distinguish between voices very well. I'm often not sure if it's Hap or Leonard speaking because their voices are so similar. And there's not much difference when it's Brett or any of the other characters either. There is never a doubt when Phil narrates. I finally had to stop resenting the voice similarities and just let the story wash over me. Admittedly, I'm not finished with it yet, but I didn't want to forget to let my comments about JD Jackson go unsaid.
