I've been following Ryan Holiday for some time, and I've always been intrigued by Peter Thiel. That said, when I first heard of this book, I knew I had to have if, but I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. It is clear there was a tremendous amount of research that went into it's creation, and the level of objectivity makes it very fair to all parties involved. Conspiracies such as the one covered by this book are often oversimplified when discussed by the masses, but Holiday puts things in perspective, reminding the reader of just how complex these issues can be from all sides.

Side note: The Count of Monte Cristo is, by far, the most excellent novel I have ever read. I was elated at the first mention of it in this book and appreciate Ryan Holiday's apparent appreciation of it as well. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend getting the Robin Buss translation from Penguin Classics.

It's perhaps the greatest work of fiction ever written. It gives hope to those who suffer. Tremendously impressed with the performance of the narrator. There are a lot of different languages and people of different nationalities. Bill Homewood does a great job with pronunciations and accents.

This book has a tremendous amount of historical examples in which the author contrasts the effects of inclusive and extractive institutions on societies throughout the ages.

I've never been to South Africa. I knew a bit about the culture, but what I knew, I learned from people who had visited the country. Very interesting to hear from the perspective of a Coloured native.

Reading reviews of this book, I imagined it would be interesting, even if not necessarily offering a narrative I agree with. After listening to the entire thing, I'm baffled by how many people have reportedly enjoyed the book. I'm less baffled by the amount of people who think this is science. It's not that the science in the book is bad, it's that the science is not used to back up his irrational thoughts. (Spoilers) The "hypothesis" (I think) is that Amazonian people have a tremendous understanding of the medicinal uses of plants, due to their ability to see DNA, a conclusion he came to after seeing snakes during a hallucination, realizing that snakes are found everywhere and resemble strands of DNA. Like I said, he does discuss science, and his understanding seems solid. The issue is that he doesn't connect the dots in any logical way. The ultimate outcome of my experience with this book is a waste of a few hours of my time. Luckily, the money I wasted can be recouped.

Honestly, this has to be one of the greatest living authors. His logic is sound, and the concepts he puts forth are eye-opening and sometimes jarring. I've personally thought about a lot of the subjects covered in this book, but in this book, he goes places I never considered. I can't recommend this enough.

I've seduced several people using the principles in this book, most of them my friends' moms. It really works.
