The topic and introduction seemed hopeful, But the framework and model did not prove to be very enlightening. Yes, mentors matter. Yes, it's probably helpful to think of various specific ways in which a mentor might consciously strive to support and encourage their mentee. That's great, but a little obvious.

I found it odd in the beginning when the authors preemptively scold their readers on the assumption that the readers will take their messages as politically partisan. Then they go on to make sure that no observant reader could avoid noticing the overtly slanted political overtones.

They present some truly impressive case studies of mentorship that are often inspiring. Nearly all are drawn from among prominent actors in one political party. Some start with impressive careers in the military or in big business, but virtually all of them serve as appointees nominated by Republican presidents to various executive branch roles. When introducing a woman who is the CEO of General Motors, they take time out to give their personal criticisms of government policy promoting electric vehicles. Why? The policy question had nothing whatever to do with the story of mentorship that they were telling. They just had to get their political message in across.

When they draw all their examples of accomplished mentees and mentors from one party in our political world and then irrelevantly insert their own partisan political opinion about an unrelated topic, it's hard to imagine how anyone could avoid seeing their message as overtly partisan.

All of that would be tolerable, if only their framework was deeply insightful or inspiring. Unfortunately it falls a bit short there too.

While changing genders and resetting this classic novel in a modern era is an intriguing idea, the actual execution of this reenvisioned novel doesn't contribute anything in the way of new insights or prospectives on a marvelous classic story.

the story tells of the gilded age from the eyes of those who did not have money and resources. The srory collide in the house of mercy. a house that is. anything but merciful. I enjoyed the nuances of the story. as of the telling of multiple voices created an image of the time. this is not a happy story. well there is some redemption in the prologues, this story is a tragedy. as we look to our past history and the trials of women.

This title has great reviews, but I found it frankly boring. I almost always finish a book once I have started it, but after over an hour of tedious drivel, I just stopped with this one.

This starts out with some very interesting ideas. It introduces relatively recent archaeological findings and documents that are certainly interesting.
Dr. Bourgeault warns against drawing grand conclusions from sparse evidence and then proceeds to do precisely that. The work is far more theological speculation than exposition of newly discovered documents and evidence-based analysis of their meaning.

Her lectures are intellectually rogorous and very interesting, but like in any great college course, she assumes we have done the assigned reading. The audible download does not include the myths that her lectures analyze, so I found myself feeling like a student who went to class without doing my homework first.

This is a beautifully rendered historical novel. The three primary characters are simultaneously heroic and touchingly human. I won't spoil the author's big revelation in her moving after word, but no one should skip it.
