Historia
Set in Nigeria in the late 1960s, The Road to the Country is the epic story of a shy, bookish student haunted by long-held guilt who must go to war to free himself. When his younger brother disappears as the country explodes in civil war, Kunle must set out on an impossible rescue mission. Kunle’s search for his brother becomes a journey of atonement that will see him conscripted into the breakaway Biafran army and forced to fight a war he hardly understands, all while navigating the prophecies of a local Seer, he who marks Kunle as an abami eda—one who will die and return to life.

Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Interesting Idea Terrible Writing
Revisado: 03-03-24
Mistborn has some interesting ideas for a fantasy novel but Sanderson’s writing is extra bad. The prose is clunky, character development is shallow, dialogue is flat. I finished it because I have friends who enjoyed this series. But I can’t recommend it.

Set on the outskirts of Umuahia, Nigeria, and narrated by a chi, or guardian spirit, An Orchestra of Minorities tells the story of Chinonso, a young poultry farmer whose soul is ignited when he sees a woman attempting to jump from a highway bridge. Horrified by her recklessness, Chinonso joins her on the roadside and hurls two of his prized chickens into the water below to express the severity of such a fall. The woman, Ndali, is stopped her in her tracks. Bonded by this night on the bridge, Chinonso and Ndali fall in love.

Inventive Modern Tragedy
Revisado: 02-24-24
From the first page I was delighted by the imaginative story-telling and characters. It is hard to tell if the tragedy comes from within the protagonist or from his surroundings. The beauty of this story is how they keep you guessing who this person is that we have been reading about the whole time.

Historia
When Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017―rendering the ancient poem in contemporary language that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)―critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time.

Accessible, Beautiful Translation and Performance
Revisado: 02-04-24
This has been a book that I have had trouble reading. This new translation and the wonderful audio performance made it so entertaining. I highly recommend you give this a try.

Have you ever slathered mustard on a hotdog and thought, "Wow, I sure hope the company that made this condiment isn't a corrupt tech startup run by a CEO who is a tyrannical chauvinist!" Well, you're about to.
