Historia
Kiese Laymon is a fearless writer. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion, and humiliation. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been.

Devastating (and occasionally censored)
Revisado: 07-15-23
A great and devastating and honest and real and valuable memoir. It also, mystifyingly, censors the five letter b-word every time the writer speaks it. Whoever up the ladder decided that, I kindly ask you get some therapy instead of taking out your hang ups on me, the reader/customer. You weirdo. Anyway great book. Vital reading for Americans.

Historia
Save Yourself is full of funny and insightful recollections about everything from coming out (at a Catholic college where sexual orientation wasn't in the nondiscrimination policy) to how joining the circus can help you become a better comic (so much nudity) to accepting yourself for who you are-even if you're, say, a bowl cut-sporting, bespectacled, gender-nonconforming child with an eye patch (which Cameron was).

Also just rly effing funny, there’s a pace picante joke that, maybe it’s just me as a southerner who grew up making those jokes my whole childhood, but when I heard it here it just knocked me to the floor in a fit of laughter

Historia
What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia is a frank assessment of America's recent fascination with the people and problems of the region. The audiobook analyzes trends in contemporary writing on Appalachia, presents a brief history of Appalachia with an eye toward unpacking Appalachian stereotypes, and provides examples of writing, art, and policy created by Appalachians as opposed to for Appalachians. The audiobook offers a much-needed insider's perspective on the region.

Important alternative to Hillbilly Elegy
Revisado: 04-23-23
People outside of Appalachia have a very p*ss poor understanding of what life is like there, the fact that it is a microcosm of America’s problems but also with a unique culture all its own that’s more than just folksy wisdom and coal miners. This book is real folksy wisdom.

On par with Stephen King’s “On Writing”
Revisado: 04-23-23
One of the best works about writing in the English canon, easily on par with the most mind-blowingly good books on the subject, truly stunning, truly stellar, I can’t say enough good things about it

Historia
In the early 20th century, the United States government concocted a plan to import hippopotamuses into the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This is true. Other true things about hippos: They are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two. This was a terrible plan. Contained within this volume is an 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe.

Historia
Who is Lolita? The Nabokov literary classic has sparked infinite discussion in the 65 years since its release, but the cultural memory the book has left behind lives more in romance and fashion aesthetics than a cautionary tale about a deceptive predator and his young prey. Jamie Loftus wants to know how we got here, and this series traces Lolita -- the person, Dolores Haze -- from her literary origin to current status as a doomed icon.

A necessary and powerful story for CSA survivors and the uninitiated alike
Revisado: 12-02-21
As a CSA survivor this story was a piercing, thoughtful, brash breath of fresh air that - despite its narrow focus - explores and explains so much of the cultural mindset I’ve grown up around in my life. If I could give it 1,000 stars I would. Jamie Loftus is a champion.
