Nothing startlingly new, but it illuminates the flaws of the man by carefully stating facts in chronological order. Whilst he has talents that have accomplished much, he also has huge flaws, clouded thinking and a total lack of maturity. He is weird!

A nice overview of tech history but surface level and driven by Kara’s gargantuan ego. Big fan of Pivot, and have a lot of respect for her, but this book is a bit of a disappointment. Worth a listen. Might be better to read rather than listen due to Kara’s half interested performance.

I paid 99c for this book. That’s as much as it’s worth.

Essentially it seems to be an attempt at gleaning nuggets of wisdom from other publications’ interviews with celebrities. Y’know the ones: self-aggrandizing, self-promotion interviews to promote products, and burnish images.

Maybe a few trickles of helpful ideas here and there I suppose.

Somewhat dry, but I think vital analysis of how social media platforms and their algorithms are changing (negatively) how we consume and create art, but also discusses other societal effects. If you are sick of SM, listen to this book and you’ll get a better understanding as to why, and what you can do about it.

Ironic that the narrator sounded like an AI. So robotic and unengaged from the material. Would have been better if read by the author.

True But A little Bit Trashy

I listened to the whole book. It illuminates the perniciousness of Fox as an organization that is happy to spread lies and malice to make money.

This is made clear by the internal communication of hosts like Tucker Carlson as compared to what he spouts on the screen. So in that sense the book is a service to Americans.

However, the tone was the same as would be a right wing book about a liberal media outlet. Not a sober account, but a lot of opinion mixed in with the facts.

A bit trashy, but fun if it aligns with your politics.

Not So Juicy

I wouldn’t want to be an author writing about a multi-billionaire, paranoid, sociopathic, impulsive, ego-maniacal, self professed super-genius.

I would be careful with my choice of words. I would lay out some facts, and keep my opinions to myself.

Walter Isaacson did.
Ben Mezrich did.

I wouldn’t say I ever liked Elon, but I respected his accomplishments and the big-thinking, almost mission-driven things he pushed forward.

But the more I hear from him lately, the more I think he is an uncaring, hard-hearted ego-maniac, who uses “big-thinking mission-driven things” as air cover to get impossibly rich and behave with total disregard to those affected by his antics.

No one seems to be quite brave enough to say that in print yet.

You Lost Me At Dead Babies

I bought this book on sale for $2. I want my money back.

Shock comedy only works if it reveals an underlying truth, or half-truth that the audience is too afraid to admit to itself. This author’s dead baby jokes are just gory - and gore isn’t intrinsically funny. At least not to me, and I’m comfortable if that makes me a “normie”.

In 3.5 chapters I didn’t LOL, I didn’t smile, and then you hit my disgust button.

Refund!

Read this book to understand the reality of crypto.

Read Michael Lewis’ book for the pleasurable consensual group hallucination of crypto where SBF is a misunderstood sweet man-child.

I’ve listened to both. This one is better and demonstrates the due-diligence of real journalism.

Sorry ML - I have been a big fan over the years, but I have lost faith in your honesty and ethics.

Overly Sympathetic - Brilliantly Written

I love listening to Michael Lewis read his own work. His writing style is captivating, his voice playful, intelligent and soothing.
But over the years I’ve come to recognize that his stories are so enjoyable because of the unsophisticated way he approaches his subjects, and since a great book needs awe-inspiring heroes, he carves them from the raw materials of more ordinary, fallible folks like you or I.

The trend continues with this book. Too trusting. Too keen to make his characters sizzle.

For an enjoyable few hours - listen with a pinch of salt.

For journalism, or objective reality - look elsewhere!
