Historia
Between 1846 and 1873, California's Indian population plunged from perhaps 150,000 to 30,000. Benjamin Madley is the first historian to uncover the full extent of the slaughter, the involvement of state and federal officials, the taxpayer dollars that supported the violence, indigenous resistance, who did the killing, and why the killings ended. This deeply researched book is a comprehensive and chilling history of an American genocide.

A must read
Revisado: 08-17-23
I purchased this first in book form for a graduate seminar and later purchased the audio book. This is an excellent book that brings the connection between settler America and the genocide of the indigenous people into stark relief. The author takes no prisoners in connecting the actions of settler Americans with Lemkin's definition of genocide defined almost a century later. The focus on California and the western states reveals how the brutality operated on an incredibly unnerving continuum. The audio version compliments the well-researched book by bringing the otherwise disheartening history to life. Anyone with an interest in American history, politics, genocide studies, and California history will be pleased with this book. Spoiler alert, a treat for me was found in the Conclusion where the Modoc, their stronghold, and their defensive and offensive postures against the invaders are discussed. This was a revealing and engrossing book.

Historia
In her award-winning interrogation of the last century of American history, Samantha Power - a former Balkan war correspondent and founding executive director of Harvard’s Carr Center for Human Rights Policy - asks the haunting question: Why do American leaders who vow “never again” repeatedly fail to stop genocide?

The reality of circumstance
Revisado: 06-29-23
This book is a testament to the politics of genocide. The author artfully puts the global community of bystanders on notice for their inaction in 20th century genocides while they also attempt to occupy higher moral ground. The genocides discussed, some during war and some during peace, each reveal something about each of us, even today. I still have to read my physical copy of the book, but given my notes in the audio version, I anticipate the book living up to this version for my research purposes. I don't have anything critical at the moment.

Historia
First published in Portuguese in 1968, Pedagogy of the Oppressed was translated and published in English in 1970. Paulo Freire's work has helped to empower countless people throughout the world and has taken on special urgency in the United States and Western Europe, where the creation of a permanent underclass among the underprivileged and minorities in cities and urban centers is ongoing. This 50th anniversary edition includes an updated introduction by Donaldo Macedo, a new afterword by Ira Shor, and many inspirational interviews.

Rendition brought to life
Revisado: 03-25-23
I enjoyed listening to this version of Pedagogy because it brought Freire's work to life. The ideas that the book discusses call out how the educational system perpetuates oppression, and this rendition captures this well. It will stay in my digital library just as the physical book remains with me. Great job!
