Even if Amber’s life - with her high-profile job and handsome, wealthy boyfriend - is more glamorous than Lucy’s, they share a down-to-earth sense of humor. Implausible
Revisado: 06-08-21
The story line is really implausible and I found myself disliking all the characters. This was a no go for me.

Worth it - good, well paced listen
Revisado: 01-07-18
Definitely a storyline that keeps the reader interested and even semi- guessing. Narration was good - not distracting. The protagonist is likable and the rest of the characters are quite interesting.

Pointless paranoia
Revisado: 12-25-16
The narration was fine except for the kids' dialogue - "Mumsy!" was awful. The entire story was a big pointless goose chase that was not intriguing in the least. Protagonist was very annoying and not believable. Not for me.

Historia
When 11-year-old James Renner fell in love with Amy Mihaljevic, the missing girl seen on posters all over his neighborhood, it was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with true crime. That obsession led James to a successful career as an investigative journalist. It also gave him PTSD. In 2011 James began researching the strange disappearance of Maura Murray, a UMass student who went missing after wrecking her car in rural New Hampshire in 2004.

More MM, less Renner?
Revisado: 06-06-16
I recently became interested in the MM case via a couple of great true crime podcasts that I follow. I find the case fascinating, and the ever emerging and wide ranging cast of characters involved are often just as compelling. James Renner is indeed one of them. I did not anticipate just how candid Renner would be about his own "issues" that came to light for him during the research on MM however, and the book becomes less insightful about Maura's disappearance. I didn't find Renner's own story to be so interesting in juxtaposition with the actual MM case, unfortunately. I appreciate his candor, and he certainly has some pretty wild tales to tell - but the level of self reflection can seem almost narcissistic in light of what happened to Maura (?) and I found myself wanting the book to delve deeper into MM's case, more about the mystery, and less into James' own psyche and motivations. I feel bad saying this but the journey into Renner's mind and background did not come across as likeable. And I want to like him! Ultimately, I still enjoyed the book, and I devoured it rapidly. Because it is such an addictive case to explore, I'm glad I read it. I may read Renner's other books too. He definitely needs to work on his audible delivery, although I have endured worse performances. Bottom line, I do recommend this book on the basis of the case itself and Renner's obviously thorough investigations all around.

Really dark, disturbed book. A complete bummer. It's way too long and it did not pull me in at all. Then it went way into the sick plot too far, also making it difficult to stay with. The character of Claire is totally ridiculous. The father's diary excepts are downright depressing. Not good. I can't believe I read it. Ugh.

Revisado: 09-19-15
Any additional comments?
This book was confusing and implausible, The main character supposedly of good background and intelligence, makes inexplicably ridiculous and immature choices throughout the plodding story. The end is not satisfying nor a reasonable explanation for why she is/was so off the rails. Just not a plausible or easy to follow book, a lot of the details are seemingly unimportant by the end. Some major plot points are ridiculously stupid. I don't understand where all the rave reviews are coming from on here. I do not recommend this book at all.
