Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Interesting story took a while to get into.
Revisado: 03-13-24
I enjoyed the second half of the book. I struggled through parts but that's on me not the writer. It started a little slow. I struggle with multiple storylines that intertwine in some books especially when I'm not focused on the book alone. However it was a good story and interesting take on ancestry and belonging. Would recommend if you like a few moving parts that come togetherv in the end.

The story was slow at parts but I was enjoyable. I enjoyed the ending because it wasn't what I expected but I was what I wanted lol. The characters s3md well though out and we're consistent with the seeing of the book. I didn't Love it but I did like it and would recommend to another reader.

Good addition to the series
Revisado: 07-10-23
I Love how the story is picked up but not awkwardly forced together. The families are intertwined but now in an unrealistic way. A great job has been done highlighting the difference in circumstances but also that they are two completely different families with a little overlap. I would be interested to see how this continues to evolve now that Lisabeth has left us.

Nice historical fiction story that is relatable
Revisado: 02-21-23
I enjoyed this book. I felt some parts were a little slow but it came together nicely. The story highlights different aspects of American life not just Black America but America as a whole. It is about upward mobility, sacrifice, and hard choices that women and even families face. I like how the author tied it into the previous book without being considered a sequel and or being heavy-handed in the references. I hope Sedeqa Johnson keeps writing books for us that are not only relatable and don't just highlight hardship but bring resilience of women to light.

Beautiful Story of Friendship and Evolution
Revisado: 08-15-22
I'm sure this is a complicated story to write. Robin did it in a way that honored her friendship and her best friend's life while being honest about some hard truths. Whitney Houston was an icon and you can tell that Robin truly loved her in whatever capacity their relationship was at any point. She wrote the story in a way to not judge or create villains as best she could. If you Love Whitney and were curious about Robin this is a good listen.
Friendship is the highest form of love and this book proved it. But having love for yourself and saving yourself should always be the top priority.

Listened after trying on kindle for months
Revisado: 07-28-22
I had been reading this book for 3 months. I was intrigued but I am a busy mom and usual listen to my books. The story was better than I thought I didn't see the ending coming or the twist. The male performance left something to be desired but didn't take anything away from the storyline but I'm sensitive tone of voice and his didn't do it for me. Overall I enjoyed the book.

Decent book
Revisado: 05-11-20
The story developed the characters very well but the plot never deviled as well as the characters. It was enjoyable to listen to because the performance was top notch but the story picked up and never really went anywhere in my opinion. More could have been done with the plot lines a couple more chapters would have done it justice.
