loved it
Revisado: 08-31-24
A "can't put it down" listen! I found myself taking extra walks during the work day to squeeze in a few more minutes. The story is excellent, if perhaps a bit slow, and the narrator is absolutely incredible! I'm immediately going to jump into the second book, and SO excited that it's a completed series.

Solid but not my favorite
Revisado: 04-21-24
Great narrator, interesting concepts, but I'm not nuts about the writing style. Also it has sort of a "dystopian future as imagined by your dad who recently started watching a lot of Fox News" vibe. It's not so overt as to be intolerable, but I definitely found myself rolling my eyes on occasion in the way he characterizes things.

Fascinating world building, terrible pacing.
Revisado: 11-10-23
I enjoyed the world the author created, and the characters are fine, but the book is SOOOOO SLOW until the last few chapters. Then suddenly it's all action.

Historia
A fiction podcast, based on the new novel 'After the Revolution' by Robert Evans. After The Revolution is set fifty years in the future, in a Texas wracked by civil war. We follow three characters: a "fixer" named Manny who leads reporters through the warzone, a young extremist named Sasha determined to join a militia called the Heavenly Kingdom, and an old veteran named Roland with a body full of U.S. army cyber-ware and a bunch of missing memories.

Fun and engaging
Revisado: 07-04-23
A fun and engaging read that I found difficult to put down! Cleverly blends a plausible near future dystopian vision with some over the top fantastical SciFi elements to great effect. My biggest critique is Robert Evans choice to narrate himself. It's not bad, per se, especially if you're a fan of his podcast, but he does have a very specific cadence and intonation that could be annoying and sometimes just didn't work. If he had hired a real narrator this book would have been truly amazing.

solidly meh.
Revisado: 05-02-23
it's not nearly as enjoyable as House By the Cerulean Sea, The vibe is extremely similar (curmudgeon learns to love) but it's a lot more maudlin and less whimsical. Both books were predictable, but with this one I kept feeling like the author was just dragging it on and on and on. if it weren't for my insomnia, I'm sure I would not have finished it.

Eric Ross is on the run from a mysterious past with his two daughters in tow. Having left his wife, his house, his whole life behind in Maryland, he's desperate for money—it's not easy to find steady, safe work when you can't provide references, you can't stay in one place for long, and you're paranoid that your past is creeping back up on you.

A great ghost story
Revisado: 03-25-23
I really enjoyed this story. The one complaint I have is that the narrator has some room for improvement. He has an amazing natural voice, but his cadence is a bit stilted. He also doesn't do a great job of adopting different voices for different characters (he does well with the two daughters, but literally everyone else sounds the same). All in all, his C+ performance didn't significantly impact my enjoyment of the book.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

A fun sci-fi romp with fantastic narration
Revisado: 01-16-23
I really enjoyed this book. At times it feels like Andy Weir is just showing off how smart he is, but the narration really saved it. Ray Porter is a powerhouse voice actor, and I loved the effects they used for the character of Rocky.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

A decently entertaining book, but far from his best work. If you're looking for a good King book in the sci-fi fantasy genre (not horror) I'd suggest The Institute instead.

Dull, dry and droning
Revisado: 10-26-22
I've read a lot of Margaret Atwood, and this is definitely one of her lesser works.
It's a well research piece of historical fiction, but frankly it's dull and dry. Moreover, the first person narration is frustrating, She uses the word "And" so frequently it is almost like a nervous tick. ex: "And he said X. And I thought A and B. And wasn't it so that Y. And Y always leads to Z. And Z is bad. And causes A B C. But I didn't say that. Then I said "X is a funny thing." And he frowned and wrote something in his notebook. And I thought Q. And never did Q not preceed R. And then he said..."
This tick is only emphasized by the narration, which is so flat and monotonous that it can only be described as droning. I mean it is the audio equivalent of Valium. Which is great if you're looking for a book to put on sleep timer and pass out to, but not great for anything else.
